Joseph Diaz Jr. Defeats Tevin Farmer, Paul & Andrade Wins

New Brizel Editorial: New Champion JoJo Diaz Defines The Hungry Fighter

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Miami, FL (January 31, 2020)– When the hungry fighter fighters, the hungry fighter is hungrier than the opposition. On Thursday, January 30, 2020, Joseph Diaz Jr. was hungry, and International Boxing Federation World Junior Lightweight champion Tevin Farmer was not.

Before the bout, ex-champion Farmer state “They (challengers) can’t beat me! I’m too much, too fast, too strong. Nobody deserves nothing in this world. You gotta go work for it. You gotta work for what you want. Nobody is gonna give you nothing. If you think you deserve something, you live on a different planet.”

Super featherweight southpaw Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz Jr., 31-1 with 15 knockouts, Downey, California, proved Farmer wrong, overcoming a bloody left eyelid gash to win a unanimous 12 round decision and take Farmer’s title, his third world title attempt since May 2018. For Diaz, who had lost a 12 round decision at featherweight to WBC World Featherweight champion Gary Russell, the other champion Farmer wanted to fight, experience was the key. Diaz won his second world title bout, but not the belt when he showed up overweight for Jesus Rojas for the vacant WBA World Featherweight title. Farmer looked past Diaz for Russell, and for a move to 135 pounds, not taking the roadblock in front of him seriously enough. Surprise! Diaz outworked Farmer on the inside and in heated exchanges.

It does not always happen the hungrier fighter scores a magical knockout or stoppage in the final round of a bout. Or, in another way of stating, the underdog does not always pull the upset. Andy Ruiz Jr. did beat Anthony Joshua the first time. Not the second time. Ingemar Johansson did beat Floyd Patterson the first time. Not the second time or the third time. Leon Spinks did beat Muhammad Ali the first time. Not the second time. Smoking’ Joe Frazier did beat Muhammad Ali the first time. Not the second time or the third time. Tony Harrison did beat Jermell Charlo the first time. Not the second time.

Diaz’ victory over Farmer at Meridian at Island Gardens, Miami, Florida, was not at all like Juan Manuel Marquez knocking out Manny Pacquiao in 2012. Simply put, Farmer got outworked and beaten by a hungry and hungrier Diaz, the better man. Will Farmer get a rematch or another shot at a 130 pound title? Likely-but-he will have to be hungry again.
