Decision Upsets of Month! Mexico’s Angulo Defeats Quillin, Dulorme Defeats Williams

Bakersfield, CA (September 22, 2019)– At age 37, Alfredo ‘Perro’ Angulo, training with Abel Sanchez at big Bear in California, proved he still had one good fight left in the tank against Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin. As Angulo put it, this win was for the many boxing fans who stuck by him over the years.
In a startling comeback televised on USA Fox Sports 1 on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at Rabobank Theater in Bakersfield, California, Angulo, fighting at 168 pounds super middleweight, scored a 10 round split decision upset over former World Boxing Organization World Middleweight champion Peter Quillin. Angulo, 26-7 with 21 knockouts, Coachilla, California, by way of Mexicali, Mexico, did not figure to beat Quillin, 34-2-1 with 21 knockouts, Brooklyn, New York, in the main event of a 14 bout card.
Both Angulo, 37, and Quillin, 36, have had their moments in the spotlight, and their names are faded draws by this point. Quillin was angling towards a world title shot at 168 pounds. With this loss, other than winning a rematch over Angulo, that possibility is not to be.
Mexicans call Angulo ‘Perro’, and a dogfight with Quillin it was. Angulo moved forward for five rounds without landing a jab. It was the punching mover versus the power shot assassin. Angulo wanted to trade, and Quillin obliged with right hands. A pivotal moment in the fight came in round three, when Angulo caught Quillin with a right hand to the head. Some of the steam of Quillin’s attack was lost at that point as his legs slowed, as Angulo dominated rounds five through eight with heavy body shots, slow but consistent. Quillin displayed somewhat of a second wind in rounds nine and ten, but many of the earlier rounds were close, with the edge in the middle five rounds to Angulo. Quillin could not jab and move like he normally did, as Angulo’s body shots ruined his usual game plan.
