German Light Heavyweight Leon Bunn, Most Improved Fighter of the Month

Of recent, there has been the Real Combat Media Fighter of the Month, Fight of the Month, Prospect of the Month, and Upset of the Month. German light heavyweight Leon Bunn is the Real Combat Media Most Improved Fighter of the Month for May 2019.


Bunn, 14-0 with eight knockouts, Frankfort, Hessen, Germany, turned pro in December 2016 with a first round stoppage of Croatian 42 bout veteran Gordon Glisic. Bunn has already won decisions at six rounds (once), eight rounds (three times) and ten rounds (twice).

On May 4, 2019, Bunn stopped 18-3 Armenian Leon Harth, a former WBC and IBO regional light heavyweight and WBO regional cruiserweight titleholder, in the ninth round to win the vacant International Boxing Federation International Light Heavyweight title. In 2015, Bunn won the German 178 pound amateur national championship. Bunn’s education has been in Germany.

Former World Super Welterweight champion Sadam Ali, and former heavyweight contender Roger Izonritei, receive honorable mention for their recent plunge into the eternal abyss of washed up and defeated.

Former World Boxing Federation World Super Lightweight champion Ali Funeka, 40-11-3 with 32 knockouts, Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, South Africa, at age 41, is the biggest ex-world champion fall of the month of May 2019. A veteran of 21 regional and world title bouts and eliminators, Funeka washed up big time, getting stopped in Frankfurt, Germany by 6-0 German super welterweight prospect Abass Baraou in the fifth round, his sixth loss in his past seven bouts. Funeka, who turned pro in September 1995, needs to call it a day.
