Mexican Boxer Victor Ruiz Scores A Huge Upset Ko over Christian Carto in Philly
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Mexican southpaw super flyweight ringer Victor ‘Pelon’ Ruiz, whose mysterious 23-10 record during his eight-year professional career includes all of his 16 knockouts in the first three rounds, scored the Real Combat Media 2019 knockout of the year, with a second-round knockout of Philadelphia’s 17-0 bantamweight prospect Christian Carto in the main event of an otherwise uneventful seven-bout card at 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
On a card billed ‘Philly Special’, four bouts on the card had gone to four round or six round decision preceding the unexpected main event upset by Ruiz. The last ten opponents of Ruiz with winning records had a combined 174 wins at the time Ruiz fought them, leading to questions as to whether the Carto camp taking this bout was such a good idea.
A former IBA world super flyweight and IBF International bantamweight title challenger, Ruiz fought Carto aggressively in rounds one and two, holding back, looking for the opportunity to land power counter shots. A perfectly timed overhand left power shot knocked out Carto on his back cold at 1:56 of round two, ending the show. Carto left 2300 Arena by ambulance on a stretcher, wearing a neck brace, wearing an oxygen mask, confirming the brutality of the knockout.
Result: Victor ‘Pelon’ Ruiz KO 2 Christian Carto, Bantamweights (1:56)
Referee: Eric Dali. No count. Carto was knocked out unconscious on his back.
