JAIME MUNGUIA vs. LIAM SMITH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
By Lita B. Kaufman, Real Combat Media Las Vegas Correspondent
Las Vegas, NV (July 17, 2018)–On Saturday, July 21st, 2018, the intimate 4,000 seat venue, The Joint at The Hardrock Hotel and Casino will be hosting two televised World Title Fights on HBO After Dark.
The WBO mandated 12-round World Super Welterweight Championship, presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Zanfer Promotions and Frank Warren and well as the WBA Super Featherweight World Title promoted by Golden Boy and Miguel Cotto Promotions in association with Don King Productions.
Competing for the distinction of WBO World Super Welterweight Champion are Jaime Munguia and Liam Smith.
Jaime Munguia (29-0-0 25 KO’s) of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico is ranked number 4 in the world and number 1 in Mexico (BoxRec). He will be fighting his first title defense of his WBO Junior Middleweight World Championship Belt. He earned this spot by defeating Sadaam Ali on May 12th, 2018 in an outstanding fourth-round TKO victory after dropping Ali several times in the last-minute World title bout. This first defense occurred just 2 months after his KO win over Johnny Navarrete. Munguia was originally scheduled to fight GGG, however, it has been reported that the Nevada State Athletic Commission did not give its blessing due to Munguia’s inexperience. The 22-year-old orthodox fighter has a significant height and age advantage at 6’1” over his opponent who comes in at 5’ 91/2” will be 30 on July 27th, 2018.
Liam Smith (26-1-1 14 KO’s) of Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom, ranked number 7 (BoxRec) has an opportunity to reclaim his status as he faces Munguia after getting knocked out by Canelo Alverez in the 9th round in his last HBO appearance on September 17, 2016. Many experts believe this fight against Munguia will yield results similar to the Canelo fight due to the fact that Munguia is also a very dangerous Mexican puncher and is fresh off of several recent victories.
The Co-Main Event features the battle for the WBA Super Featherweight World Title between Alberto Machado and Rafael Mensah. This is another 12-rounder promoted by Golden Boy and Miguel Cotto Promotions in association with Don King Productions.
Alberto Machado (19-0, 16 KO’s) of San Juan, Puerto Rico, the hard-hitting southpaw, puts his WBA Super Featherweight World Championship on the line. He believes he will leave with his belt and there is no stopping his success with Freddie Roach in his corner. Machado is ranked number 3 in the world right under Gervonta Davis and is number 1 in Puerto Rico (BoxRec). He stands 5’10 and at the age of 27 has a reach of 72”.
Rafael Mensah (31-0, 23 KOs) of Accra, Ghana is the number one contender for this fight. After facing much adversity in his home country and languishing under poor management, he is now trained by Stacy McKinley and promoted by Don King Promotions. Mensah and his camp are confident he will defeat Machado under his new tutelage and will be his first fight outside of his native Ghana. Several websites list him as orthodox however several report the contrary as a southpaw. His other stats are seemingly a mystery, therefore, I will defer to the tale of the tape.
This event is sponsored by Tecate, “The Official Beer of Boxing” and Casa Mexico Tequila. The fight will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00PT.
