His Nightmare! Martirosyan Loses to GGG for the $$$
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Los Angeles, CA (May 6th, 2018)– Armenian American Vanes ‘Nightmare’ Martirosyan has not won a professional bout since September 2015. The WBA, WBC and the IBO, therefore, had no solid justification to sanction Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin defending these three world middleweight titles against Martirosyan for the cash.
In fact, a check of Martirosyan’s 36-4 record shows he has fought 17 times at the 160 pound middleweight level, the last time being a 10 round decision loss to the then 25-0 Jermell Charlo in Las Vegas in 2015. Primarily a junior middleweight, Martirosyan made weight for Golovkin, but came in for the money insufficiently prepared for GGG. Martirosyan had a decent round one, before getting knocked out cold on the ropes in round two. Having lost a 12 round WBA and IBO Junior Middleweight World title bout to Erislandy Lara in 2012, how did that loss propel him into a world title bout with GGG?
The protection of a rematch between GGG and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is obviously the reason Martirosyan got the call, with Canelo suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for six months due to testing positive for doping violations, enabling him to fight GGG again September 2018. Martirosyan still emerged from his loss to GGG with a top 20 BoxRec worldwide middleweight rating, probably for having the nerve to step into the ring with GGG in the first place in the HBO-televised event at StubHub Center in Carson, California, on May 5, 2018.
Promoter Don King stated ‘Every indication is that this is an event of destiny.” In a sense it was, Martirosyan, the late replacement who lasted 113 seconds longer, was almost as bad as Don King sending Bermane Stiverne into a WBC World Heavyweight title rematch with Deontay Wilder as a late replacement fighter at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, last November, tumbling to the canvas three times in a convenient 2:59 of the first round.
Result: Gennady Golovkin KO 2 Vanes Martirosyan, Middleweights (1:54)
GGG retains the WBC, WBA and IBO World Middleweight titles
Referee: Jack Reiss. IBO Supervisor: Ed Levine. WBA Supervisor: Carlos Chavez. WBC Supervisor: Duane Ford.
