Rhys ‘Skeletor’ McKee is the new BAMMA World Lightweight Champion after a devastating display against Tim Barnett on the main card of BAMMA 34: Lohore Vs. Brazier, avenging his only career loss to date. After making his mark on his pro debut when he submitted seasoned pro John ‘Johnny Jitzu’ Redmond, McKee’s rise to the top of Lightweight division has been nothing short of sensational. Winning the previously named Lonsdale (now RDX) title, he went on to face Tim Barnett in his hometown, dropping the only loss of his career. After the bout it was revealed that Rhys had been very ill and had competed anyway, and he vowed to reclaim what he felt he should never have surrendered. Fast forward to Friday March 9th at the SSE Arena, Wembley and BAMMA 34. McKee showed maturity beyond his 22 years as he put on a formidable and clinical performance that saw him both reclaim the RDX title and take home the BAMMA World Title. Now unified champion, McKee is the second youngest fighter to ever hold a title alongside the likes of former double weight Champion Tom ‘Firekid’ DuQuesnoy. Reflecting on his mammoth achievement, McKee spoke to BAMMA.com “It’s nice to see the vision I had for a long time come true!! I had a fantastic time performing in London and getting the redemption and the title I wanted but now I’m very much focused on my first defence and staying the Champion!” – Rhys ‘Skeletor’ McKee Stay tuned for information on McKee’s first title defence |
