Mysterious Guillermo Jones to Reappear in New WBA Bout

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

At age 45, Guillermo Jones, 40-3-2 with 30 knockouts, Colon, Panama, is perhaps promoter Don King’s last major calling card (as Bermane Stiverne did not make it out of the first round of the rematch with Deontay Wilder).

On November 18, 3017, in Santo Domingo, Jones will face Ytalo Perea, a dangerous 9-2-2 fighter out of Ecuador who fights both Cruiserweight and heavyweight, now residing in Howard Beach, New York, for the vacant WBA Fedelatin Heavyweight title. Jones has WBA extensive titular experience. Jones will be fighting his seventeeth WBA Fedelatin or WBA world title bout. Both Don King and Jones know with mastery how to use the WBA Fedelatin belt to a ratings advantage.

Jones won a 6 rounder over Garrett Wilson last year, while Perea won 6 rounder over 47-year-old veteran Cuban heavyweight Elieser Castillo in his last bout this year.

The major question in this 11 rounder is which version of Jones will show up. Perea, an ex-Olympian, has a big heart but has never gone past 8 rounds. Perea is only 24 years old to Jones 45 years old. At some point, Jones has to fold. However, Jones is not inactive, it is just Don King’s does not fight him often, like a card in a poker hand you just cannot see.

Jones is predicted to win the WBA Fedelatin Heavyweight title by 11 round decision. However, if Don King’s intention is to cash out Jones, primarily a cruiserweight, in a Heavyweight title bout against Deontay Wilder, Anthony Joshua or Joseph Parker, he is not likely to do so after the Stiverne-Wilder last-minute opponent rematch disgrace.

King is aiming for the vacant regular WBA Heavyweight title last held by 25-0 Australian Lucas Browne in 2016. Shannon Briggs and Fres Oquendo were supposed to fight for it, but that bout fell through in 2017 after Briggs tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. The WBA Fedelatin belt, if Jones acquires it, could provide a springboard to the WBA vacant heavyweight belt.
