Who Won? GGG and Canelo Fight To A Draw in the Drama Show

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Las Vegas, NV (September 17th, 2017)– “Rematch! I want to fight!” Said Gennady Golovkin. “I won seven or eight rounds!” Saul Alvarez. After the first three rounds, where Canelo was the aggressor, GGG appeared to win the rest of the fight as the come forward aggressor. Canelo would land hard shots here or there, but with his arms tiring from the extra weight at 160 pounds, Canelo could not sustain his attacks. The fear was the majority Mexican crowd would help Canelo to steal the fight. Listening to the Mariachi music in the background all night made it obvious.

It was a drama show. The international boxing public wanted this bout. They got it. In the main event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday evening, September 16, 2017, Gennady GGG Golovkin, 37-0-1 with 33 k knockouts, Kazakhstan, and Saul Canelo Alvarez, 49-1-2 with 34 knockouts, Guadalajara, Mexico, settled for a 12 round draw. The bout looked like GGG won, but the majority Mexican crowd influenced the outcome.

Both fighters landed their head shots, and took them equally as well. Canelo landed some effective body shots here and there. Overall, GGG appeared to land more consistently as he walked Canelo down. Canelo had power, and GGG had power. Neither appeared able to hurt the other, and both had chins of granite. GGG appeared to win at least eight to 10 rounds, but who knows who won? It was a great drama show which could leave to a rematch. Or, either GGG or Canelo could fight Billy Joe Saunders, the other paper champion at 160 pounds, in the near future. Saunders decisioned Willie Monroe last night.

GGG versus Canelo did not have the fire of a Marvelous Marvin Hagler versus Thomas Hearns, or a Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Manny Pacquiao. It was more like two Carlos Mon versions going at it, with the final verdict on both fighters being inconclusive. At 35, GGG cannot have many good years left, so he took the mega fight. At 27, Canelo can outlast him. In the end, GGG versus Canelo made money, and the fans got their money’s worth. Who won? Who knows? It was a good scrap for all 12 rounds. Do it again? Maybe.

Result: Gennady Golovkin Draw 12 Saul Alvarez, Middleweights

Golovkin retains IBF, IBO, WBA Super and WBC World Middleweight titles

Scoring: 118-111 Alvarez. 115-113 Golovkin. 114-114 Draw.

Referee: Kenny Bayless. Alvarez now BoxRec number one 160 lb. world rated, GGG is # 2.
