WBC MAKES RULING THAT PROHIBITS FATHERS ACTING AS CHIEF SECONDS IN THEIR SONS CORNER
Miami, Florida (December 14th, 2016)– The WBC (World Boxing Council) have passed a ruling which prohibits fathers acting as chief seconds in their son’s corner in WBC regulated fights. The ruling was passed at the organisations annual convention which is still currently ongoing. The reasoning behind the ruling is due to the WBC feeling that parents could not have their son’s best interests at heart and allowing fights to go on too long, which could potentially affect their health from extensive damage suffered in a bout. Father’s can still train their sons in camp and lead training and supervise in camp, just not in competition. Fathers can still work in the corner of their son, just not as a chief second.
The ruling was discussed and passed by the inaugural trainers committee which has Abel Sanchez and UK’s Joe Gallagher sitting on the committee.
This ruling could have implications on the Keith Thurman vs. Danny Garcia unification bout with Garcia holding the WBC welterweight title and trained by his father Angel Garcia. No date of implication of the ruling has been announced as of time of press.
