Guadalajara, Jalisco (December 9th, 2016)– Super Bantamweight contender Alejandro Tapatio ‘Cobrita’ Gonzalez Jr., 23, who decked Carl Frampton twice in the first round of their July 2015 International Boxing Federation World title bout in El Paso, Texas, but who did not get the 12 round decision, was executed Friday morning, December 9, 2016, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico with two friends inside a jeep van in the Colonia Gonzalez Gallo area in Guadalajara. All three were discovered dead at the scene. No motive for the three murders is yet known. One of the two dead people with Gonzalez is believed to have been his grandfather.
A native in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, Gonzalez fought professionally from March 2010 to October 2016, compiling a record of 23-3-3 with 15 knockouts. Debuting at age 17, Gonzalez fought 15 times in Guadalajara and 11 times in Guadalajara. In his last ring appearance, Gonzalez fought to a 12 round draw this past October for the interim World Boxing Council Fecombox Super Bantamweight title. He previously won the interim World Boxing Council Youth Silver Bantamweight title with a second round knockout of 19-0 Hanzel Martinez in Tijuana in February 2013.
Gonzalez was the son of Alejandro ‘La Cobrita’ Gonzalez, the former featherweight and lightweight world champion from Guadalajara. His father, who resides in Los Angeles, California, survives him. From 1988 to 2003, the elder Gonzalez compiled a pro record of 49-5-1 with 33 knockouts, retiring after winning his last bout, a 10 round decision at age 30.
