Say A Prayer For Middleweight Nick Bang Bang Blackwell
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
In 24 bouts, in 25 years, never with tears, never with fears
In the ring there was an assembly, as the tragedy unfolded in Wembley
Six years of courage, and a British champion was he
Now in a coma, his soul still not free.
He left the ring with conscious light
He sleeps in the unconscious black
He is now well, he is Nick Blackwell.
24 years ago Michael Watson fell in a world title fight
A neurosurgeon operated five times, and saved his sight
Michael Watson at 50 can still see the light
Nick Blackwell’s vision is dark as the night.
Chris Eubank pleaded to his son, don’t hit him in the head
From the fourth round on, he thought Blackwell’s left eye too swollen
Too red
And if Chris Eubank Jr. kept hitting him too much,
Father thought Blackwell would soon be………
Another Eubank tragedy.
On the road to world champion there are many a thorn
A father was world champion, and a son was born
Destiny is for some a heavenly cause
An impossible dream, with thought for pause.
For dreams they come, and dreams they go
Someone wins, the other fell.
May there still be light for Nick Blackwell.
Say a prayer, my friends, for young Nick Blackwell.
Surgery there is not to be. Prayer and luck, and we will see.
Hope is always the eternal key. To be or not to be.
