WHAT ARE CANELO’S OPTIONS FOR MAY 2016???

By Anthony L. Gonzalez, Real Combat Media Editor in Chief

Roselle Park, NJ (November 23, 2015)– With Saul Canelo Alvarez coming off a decisive win over Miguel Cotto this past weekend, this now opens the door for many for more future lucrative fights for the 25 year old Mexican superstar. In the Cotto vs. Canelo post press conference, Golden Boy Promotions President, Oscar De la Hoya announced that Canelo has a May date reserved for his next opponent. Since there is an existing lawsuit that Golden Boy Promotions filed against Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions earlier this year, some of Canelo’s future options are limited at this time.

Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 Kos) is a fight that the HBO networks would love to have featured on their next May PPV broadcast. The HBO commentary was constantly pushing for this fight during Saturday night’s broadcast and Max Kellerman asked Canelo in the post fight interview if this was a fight that he would be interested in. Canelo answered that he would fight GGG at any time.  Earlier in the month Canelo said he would fight GGG, however he mentioned he would like to fight GGG at a catchweight of 155lbs. Since Canelo is now considered the lineal middleweight champion at 160lbs, the reason for unifying the belts at the 155 pound catchweight remain unclear. There is also a possibility that GGG may face rising Mexican star, Gilberto Ramirez (33-0, 24 Kos) in his next fight. However the 6 foot 3 Ramirez currently fights in the 168lb. weight class and is promoted by Top Rank. The other question remains do you fight GGG in May or take time to build up this super fight later in 2016.

A possible Floyd Mayweather (49-0, 26Kos) rematch could be made for May if Mayweather decides to come out of retirement. The rematch would be very lucrative for both fighters. Oscar De La Hoya mentioned Saturday night in the video below that Floyd Mayweather is definitely a lucrative option for both fighters. This fight would be very interesting because Floyd Mayweather has a chance to break Rocky Marciano’s record of 49-0 and Canelo will have an opportunity to avenge his only loss. A rematch with Mayweather would be Canelo’s largest check to date since they first fought in September 2013.

Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 Kos) is definitely an option for May. I personally had Cotto winning 5 rounds and the fight was pretty competitive despite what the judges thought. Miguel has one more fight left on his Roc Nation contract and if the numbers make sense, we may see a rematch.

Tim Bradley (32-1-1, 13Kos) mentioned that he would be interested in moving up in weight for a possible Canelo showdown. Bradley is coming an impressive TKO victory being the first fighter to stop Brandon Rios under the tutelage of his new trainer, Teddy Atlas. This can also be an interesting possibility for the Mexican slugger.

Canelo and Golden Boy can also opt and go the tuneup route and fight the winner of the December 19th HBO Latino showdown and fight the winner from the experienced defensive technician Joshua Clottey (39-4, 22 Kos) against the always rugged fan favorite, Gabriel Rosado (21-9, 13 Kos). Both of these fighter are no strangers to the boxing community and have fought on the HBO big stage many times over the past years.  Our sources indicate that this could be a possibility for Canelo.

Another option could be Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6Kos), who fought hard in his TKO loss to GGG in June of 2015. Monroe is a slick boxer that can give Canelo problems and take some rounds from him since he has the superior footwork. I am not sure this would be the best route for Canelo, however this fight would be a great fight to acclimate Canelo at the new middleweight weight class for a future fight with GGG later on.

David Lemieux (34-3, 31 Kos) who just lost to GGG on the October HBO PPV card is promoted by Golden Boy. Lemieux did not look good against GGG because he was kept at a distance by GGG’s jab the whole night.  This is an very interesting fan friendly fight since both fighters feature a lot of power and come forward. This fight can also be used as a perfect measuring stick for a possible Canelo vs. GGG later next year.

Comment below as to who you think Canelo should fight next in May 2016.
