International Weekend Recap: Stiverne and Hurd Win, Rodriguez Survives A Scare

At the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, November 14, 2015, Haiti’s 25-2-1 former WBC World Heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne came off the canvas in the first round to win a unanimous ten round decision over 30-11 Medford, New York, veteran Derric Rossy. The powerful 17-0 Al Haymon super welterweight prospect Jarrett Hurd of Accokeek, Maryland, remained unbeaten, unleashing a lethal combination of head and body shots which sent 17-0-2 previously unbeaten Frank Galarza of Brooklyn, New York, staggering backward out on his feet at 0:59 of round six. 12-0 Anahi Sanchez of Buenos Aires, Argentina, retains the WBA Interim World Female Featherweight title, with a ten round decision win over 11-4 Ana Lozado of Caracas, Venezuela, in a bout at the Pergamino Municipal Gym in Buenos Aires.
On Friday, November 13, 2015, at Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, two contests were rock’em sock’ em go for broke, and were wild while they briefly lasted. Eight knockdowns resulted in two brief main event bouts.
In the light heavyweight main event, Michael Seals decked Edwin Rodriguez twice in the first round, but Seals got decked in the first and the second. Rodriguez landed a right to the jaw which sent the 19-0 Seals, now 19-1 with 14 knockouts, Atlanta, Georgia, off the ropes, down and out at 0:24 of the third round. The Dominican Rodriguez is now 28-1 with 19 knockouts, Worcester, Massachusetts. Rodriguez did not win a round in his 2013 WBA world title bout with Andre Ward at 168 pounds. Good luck to Rodriguez in the 175 pound division against Adonis Stevenson, Sergey Kovalev, Andrzej Fonfara and other notables.
Rodriguez was lucky to survive a scary first round, and appeared to make it out of the round due the referee’s big mistake in the rules of the ring. After Seals knocked him down for the second time, Rodriguez looked done. When the referee asked Rodriguez to step forward, he did not respond. Nonetheless, the referee waved the fight on, and Seals clubbed Rodriguez backward onto the ropes, where he was as the bell rang.
In the prelim bout to the main event, southpaw light heavyweight Thomas Williams Jr., 19-1 with 13 knockouts, Fort Washington, Maryland, traded knockdowns with Umberto Savigne, before knocking him down again and stopping him with power shots to the head at 1:48 of the second round. Savigne is 12-3 with nine knockouts, Cuba via Miami, Florida.
