REAL COMBAT MEDIA WEEKLY BOXING REPORT – “Split Decision Edition“

Zo-Crooks

By Zo Crooks,Real Combat Media Chicago Boxing Correspondent

Welcome back to another edition of the Real Combat Media Boxing Weekly Report,“Split Decision Edition”, where we keep you informed on what’s going on in the world of the squared circle on a weekly basis.  This week we have the recap of a few fights including Peterson vs Diaz, GGG vs Lemieux, the return of Boo Boo Andrade, Bud Crawford vs Jean, Chocalatio and more.  Also the return of Pacquiao, Bob Arum and Al Haymon lawsuit news, Andre Ward latest and more…Without further ado…Let’s go!

First and foremost we (Real Combat Media) want to send a special prayer out to Prichard Colon and his family.  Boxing is a dangerous sport!  Colon suffered hemorrhaging on the brain following his bout with Terrel Williams.  Praying for his recovery!!!

Scary night in the squared circle!!!  Prichard Colon came into the bout against Terrel Williams undefeated at 16-0 with 13 KOs with 14 victories coming in the last two years.  Williams also came in undefeated at 14-0 with 12 KOs.  However Colon was known as the bigger prospect and was the favored fighter.  Colon started off good…controlling the distance with the jab and countering well.  Then Williams started to put the pressure on him.  In the fifth round Colon hit Williams with a low blow and was deducted two points for the intentional foul.  Williams took the fight over for the next two rounds.  Then in the seventh Williams was putting it on Colon and he caught Colon on the back of the head with a shot as he turned away.  Colon went down clutching the back of his head.  The ref took a point away from Williams for the foul.  Colon finished strong but that blow seemed to bother him.  He kept rubbing his head.  In the ninth round Williams went to work and dropped Colon twice.  Colon survived the round and went back to his corner.  They took his gloves off thinking the fight was over but it wasn’t.  The referee then stopped the bout as a DQ in favor of Williams.  After the fight Colon complained of his head hurting and began to vomit in the dressing room.  He was rushed to the hospital where it was determined that he had hemorrhaging on the brain and was in a coma.  Damn!  The update on his condition is that he is still in a coma but is now breathing on his own without the assistance of a machine.

Putting in work in the DMV….Lamont Peterson, native of Washington, D.C., fought in front of his home crowd against Felix Diaz as the main event of the PBC.  Peterson was coming off of a robbery decision to Danny Garcia and Diaz, the 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist, came into the bout 17-0.  This bout wasn’t easy for Peterson but he deservedly got the nod to hand Diaz his first loss.  Diaz showed some nice counter punching ability, but Peterson just had that dog veteran in him.  Experience was the factor in this one.  It might be time for Peterson to move up to 147.  Then again it’s still some good matchups for him at 140.  The loss won’t hurt Diaz at all.  He lost to seasoned vet.

The return of COOL!  My man Demetrius “Boo-Boo” Andrade returned to the ring after 16 months in Uncasville, CT. close to his hometown of Providence, RI.  Boo-Boo took on unknown Fabian Pucheta.  He just simply beat dude up!  Plain and simple.  He dropped him twice in the first and once in the second to finish the fight.  He made a good point after the bout when he spoke his mind.  “Everybody else can get the big fights. Why can’t I get the big fights,” Andrade said. “(Erislandy) Lara calls out (Canelo Alvarez) and he gets that fight, but I can’t get Lara? He can go in and barge in on Canelo’s press conference and get that fight. Why can’t I get the same thing? No disrespect to any fighter because anyone who gets in that ring, I have high respect for, but it’s time for me to showcase what I really have against the guys everyone thinks is No. 1.”  I feel you my guy.  I really do!  It’s time for Boo Boo to be mentioned and lined up for for a bout with the divisions best!!!

“Are you entertained????”….. Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez is the real deal.  Putting him at the top of my P4P list is not happening but dude got mad skillz!  Fighting on the HBO PPV undercard Gonzalez got to showcase his talents on a larger stage and he did not disappoint.  Chocolatito took on hard hitting Brian Viloria.  Viloria started off strong winning the first two rounds.  The third round was a different story.  Gonzalez caught Viloria with a sniper right hand that sent him down to the canvas.  Viloria survived the round but got beat down the rest of the way with the referee stopping the bout in the ninth round.  I give Viloria credit though because he caught Gonzalez with some good shots.  However Gonzalez was just on a different level.  He looks a lot like his mentor, the late Alexis Arguello.

When style meets substance….. David Lemieux has style, no doubt, but he ran up against a hell of a substance in Gennady “GGG” Golovkin!  To me this fight showcased more of GGG’s boxing skills.  He was patient and used his jab to set up everything.  His movement was superb as well.  GGG actually looked more like a boxer than a destroyer. But damn he put them hands on Lemieux.  Most people thought this would be a competitive fight and GGG’s toughest opponent and the test that everyone has been waiting for.  I’m truly surprised that the bout went eight rounds.  In the fifth round Golovkin dropped Lemieux with a wicked body shot, but then hit him while he was down on one knee.  He got away with a warning for the foul.  Referee Steve Willis stopped the bout in the eight round.  This is now Golovkin’s 21st KO in a row.  This makes the Miguel Cotto vs Canelo Alvarez fight more interesting because the winner may have to face Golovkin.

“Omaha…Omaha…Omaha”….Terence “Bud” Crawford returned to the ring in his hometown of Omaha, NE to take on Dierry Jean of Canada at the CenturyLink Center.  Dierry Jean is a former sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao with his only loss against Lamont Peterson in a competitive bout.  So many thought that this bout would be competitive too.  In my Clay Davis voice…SHHEEEEEEEEDDDDD….lol.  Jean got an ass whoopin!  In the first round Bud was patient, feeling Jean out.  Then all of a sudden Bud switched to southpaw and confused the hell out of Jean.  Then he dropped him right before the end of the first round.  Bud remained in the southpaw stance for most of the fight and just dismantled Jean all night.  Jean landed a couple of hard right hands himself but that seemed to piss Bud off more.  Jean got dropped again in the ninth round and Bud finished him off in the tenth.  If this was Crawford’s audition for a fight with Pacquiao, I think he got the job!

Easy money in the bank!  Chris Eubank Jr. made easy work of veteran Tony Jeter.  Eubank scored a second round stoppage over Jeter.  Straight beatdown from the opening bell.  Following the bout, promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed the WBA had made Eubank Jr’s next bout against Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan on December 12 the final eliminator to face the victor of Peter Quillin-Daniel Jacobs.

WORD IS!!!!!

Manny Pacquiao is returning to the ring April 2016 for the final fight of his career against an opponent that’s yet to named according to Bob Arum, but Terence Crawford is rumored to be the front-runner especially after this weekend’s performance.  “We talked very seriously and he said, ‘Bob, hopefully, by the middle of May I will have been elected senator in the Philippines and at that point, I cannot engage in boxing because I need to focus on the senate and I have to be in attendance.’ Manny told me this fight on April 9 will be his last fight,” stated Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum, who confirmed that 8-division world champion Manny Pacquiao will be hanging up his gloves following what will be his final fight on April 9, 2016.  This will be ideal for Bob Arum…out with the old and in with the new.  Exchanging that old money for new money.

Andre “SOG” Ward  have to find another dance partner for his upcoming scheduled bout on the undercard of Miguel Cotto vs Canelo Alvarez on November 21st.  Ward was lined up to face Australian Rohan Murdock but the NSAC shot that down by refusing to sanction the light heavyweight bout considering it a mismatch.  That’s a first!  Damn I wish they do this for other fighters as well…lol.  For real!!!!  Now Ward has to face someone else and the fight is less than thirty days away.  That’s crazy because this was the first of three fight agreement that Ward has signed with HBO.  Also included in that agreement is a showdown with WBA/WBO/IBF light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev at the end of 2016.  Can’t wait for that!!!!

Save the date December 19th.  That’s when Bryant “Bye-Bye” Jennings (19-1 10 KOs) takes on undefeated hard hitting Cuban Luis “The Real King-Kong” Ortiz (23-0 20 KOs) on HBO Boxing After Dark.  Ortiz’s newly acquired interim WBA belt will be on the line in this fight!  The undercard is good too!  Jamaican Nicholas “Axeman” Walters (26-0 21 KOs) will be  making his 130-pound debut against Jason Sosa (18-1, 14 KO), who has knocked out his last thirteen opponents.

Former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver has reportedly tested positive for synthetic testosterone, a banned substance, in a drug test before his heavyweight draw with Steve Cunningham on Aug. 14 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.  This is the second time that Tarver has tested positive for a banned substance.  Tarver issued a statement Monday denying that he took a banned substance.  I hope and pray that he didn’t because he is a well respected and beloved fighter.

Gennady Golovkin vs David Lemieux reportedly did a dismal 150,000 PPV Buys last weekend.  That sucks considering GGG is considered as the fighter to replace Floyd “Money” Mayweather as the P4P and PPV King!  Let’s look at this from a different perspective.  He didn’t crack a quarter of Mayweather vs Andre Berto PPV buys that brought in an estimate of 500,000, which is considered to be a huge failure for Money May!  So your replacement can’t come close to Money May on his worst day!  I will leave that one right there!

I know that I am not the only one that thinks this but HBO Boxing needs to replace some analysts.  Keep Roy Jones Jr. and Max Kellerman and get rid of Jim Lampley and Harold Letterman!  RJJ is the one bright star on that panel and if they let Kellerman off the leash that would be a hell of a commentary!  Lampley is bias and prejudice!  Yeah I said it!!!  His comments are way off and out of bounds at times.  He calls punches that don’t land in favor of his favorite fighters.  I just don’t like dude!!!  I hope HBO sees this and corrects it soon!

Al Haymon is a BOSS!!!!  Top Rank promoter Bob Arum’s $100 million lawsuit against Premier Boxing Champions creator Al Haymon was dealt a blow when Judge John H. Walter dismissed its antitrust claims, one of the core aspects of the suit, in a written order Friday.  Walter also granted co-defendant Waddell & Reed’s motion to be dismissed from the suit. Waddell & Reed is the Kansas City-based investment group that Haymon lined up to invest more than $400 million from its $40 billion hedge fund in order to bankroll the PBC.  Waddell & Reed was dismissed from the suit, with Walter ruling the company did not belong in it.

Now check this out…Arum’s lawsuit was filed in July in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. It contends Haymon’s PBC series, for which Haymon has purchased tens of millions of dollars worth of time on a multitude of networks, including ESPN, NBC, CBS and Spike TV, is monopolistic and violates federal antitrust laws as well as the federal Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act, which makes it illegal to act as both a manager, who has a fiduciary duty to a boxer, and a promoter, who does not. Top Rank alleges that Haymon serves in both capacities for most of the 200-plus fighters in his stable and merely hires what the lawsuit calls “sham” promoters to do his bidding.

What Haymon is doing for the sport is nothing short of amazing!  He has brought boxing back to network television.  This is a huge plus for boxers and the boxing world.  Haymon has taken them off of premium cable channels and put them right in your living room for the world to see.  The exposure is great for the sport of boxing.  Remember growing up and seeing Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Muhammad Ali, Aaron Pryor and more on ABC Wide World of Sports?  Boxing was mainstream back in the day and Haymon has brought that back!  Fighters are getting paid and viewers are getting good fights on a consistent basis.  Haymon has taken so much heat for doing the sport of boxing a solid!  Which baffles the hell out of me and many others.  Let me just make it plain and simple for you!  If Haymon was white then we wouldn’t be having this conversation!  #ThankyouAlHaymon
