GLENDALE, AZ. (October 14, 2015) -Tonight’s
Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on
ESPN fight card featured Mexican brawler
Aron Martinez (20-4-1, 4 KOs) capturing a unanimous decision (97-93, 97-93, 96-94) victory over former world champion
Devon Alexander “The Great” (26-4, 14 KOs). In a 10-round battle, spent mostly on the inside, Martinez managed to emerge victorious.
The televised opener showcased a 12-round, action-packed battle as Lee Selby (22-1, 8 KOs) made his U.S. debut and secured a unanimous decision (116-112, 118-110, 119-109) win over former three-division world champion Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel (54-5-2, 39 KOs).
Here is what the fighters had to say about their performances tonight:
DEVON ALEXANDER
“I wanted to be smart and aggressive in there tonight, and that’s what I did.
“He was coming in fast like we knew he would. We knew he was going to come forward. I just couldn’t get my shots off like I wanted to.
“Consecutive losses are tough, but I’m not easily discouraged. I just need to regroup and then we’ll see what’s next. I’m still considered one of the best.”
“I’m the heavier guy. I’ve always fought at 147 lbs. This is my natural weight and I sparred against much bigger guys during the last few weeks of training camp. I was facing fast 180 lbs fighters in camp to get ready for this.
“We followed our game plan tonight. I give (Alexander) props for standing in there with me.
“Fighting on a PBC card on
ESPN is the best kind of opportunity for me. I’ll use this fight to get another great chance like I got tonight.
“I’ll fight whoever they put in front of me. I’m always the underdog, but I embrace it because that mentality has pushed me to work harder.”
LEE SELBY
“My jab, reach and speed were my biggest advantages tonight. That was how I got the win.
“All the cuts I’ve had in my career have come against shorter fighters like (Montiel). When I got cut tonight in the 6th round it was the same thing. I caught a head butt.
“I was honestly disappointed in my performance tonight. I got the win and it was a great feeling to get my first one on U.S. soil. But the fans didn’t see me at my best, and a big part of that was Montiel’s experience. He’s a great fighter.”
FERNANDO MONTIEL
“I thought it was a lot closer fight than the judges had it on the scorecard.
“I spent the first few rounds waiting for him to come at me so I could counterpunch. But he wasn’t engaging me so I became the aggressor and brought the fight to him.
“It was an honor to fight on this PBC card here in Arizona. I honestly think I deserve a rematch. I want to fight him again.”
Alexander vs Martinez RecapBy Jason Gonzalez, Real Combat Media Arizona Boxing Correspondent-Ringside
On Wednesday October 14th ESPN had a night of boxing on their series Premier Boxing Champions. The fights featured Devon Alexander (26-4, 14 ko’s) vs Aaron Martinez (20-4-1, 4 ko’s) in the main event and co-featured Lee Selby (22-1, 8 ko’s) vs Fernando Montiel ( 54-5-2, 39 ko’s) in the co-main event. There was even guest appearances by Adrien Broner, Shawn Porter, and Robert Garcia.
The night started off with Kevin Newman (4-0-1, 1 ko) beating Jay Williams (3-8) by unanimous decision which included a knock-down in the 2nd round. Next Lionell Thompson (16-3, 10 ko’s) beat Thomas Hanshaw (6-7, 4 ko’s). The referee stopped the fight in between the 2nd and 3rd round when he thought Hanshaw had enough. After that Alexis Santiago (20-3-1, 8 ko’s) beat Gustavo Molina (10-9, 4 ko’s) by unanimous decision. Then Robert Garcia’s fighter Ivan Redkach (19-1, 14 ko’s) knocked out Erick Martinez (11-3-1, 5 ko’s) in the 3rd round.
Starting the live televised fights was the co-main event where the IBF Featherweight Champion Lee Selby (22-1, 8 ko’s) took on Fernando Montiel ( 54-5-2, 39 ko’s). From the get go it was evident that Montiel was the harder puncher, this could be seen time to time when Montiel would wobble Selby. Regardless of Montiel’s power Selby was the younger fighter with the height and reach advantage. Selby would use his reach to his advantage and use his jab to keep Montiel away. The only problem was that occasionally when Selby would throw a jab he would lower his right arm leaving his face exposed to Montiel’s left hook. Montiel’s veteran experience could only get him so far. Selby was the more active and accurate puncher throughout the fight which got him a unanimous decision win.
In the main event Devon Alexander (26-4, 14 ko’s) took on Aaron Martinez (20-4-1, 4 ko’s). In the first couple of rounds the fighters were awkwardly dancing in the ring trying to figure out one another. But in the 3rd round the ball got rolling and the momentum was on Martinez’s side. Martinez forced himself on Alexander and made Alexander go toe to toe with him. Martinez put relentless pressure on Alexander and fought the whole fight on the inside. Alexander, being a boxer, should have stayed on the outside and out boxed Martinez. Instead Alexander played Martinez’s game and tried to slug it out. Martinez’s ability to make Alexander fight his fight gave Martinez a unanimous decision win.
