Wild Cruiserweight Upset! Brian Howard Kayos Guerrero in First Round of Main Event
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent-Ringside
Jamaica, NY (September 20th, 2015)– Promoters like Russell Peltz take notice. After an absence of nearly three years, cruiserweight contender Brian Howard is back. Working with the new team of principal trainer Elvin Thompson, and assistant trainers Harold Neal and Ofa Donaldson, Howard entered the ring in the main event of a nine bout pro boxing card at Resorts New World Casino in Queens, New York, on Saturday evening, September 19, 2015, as the blue corner underdog. His opponent was 12-0-1 cruiserweight contender Alex Guerrero of Salisbury, Maryland, the brother of southpaw middleweight contender Fernando Guerrero.
In contrast to the flashy Guerrero, Howard entered the ring in top condition, but appeared stoic quiet. When the bell rang, song jabs flashed in both directions. Guerrero settled in comfortably in front of Howard, trying to crowd him from throwing jabs, and looking to counter anything Howard might then try to throw.
Big mistake.
Howard, seeing the immediately opening with Guerrero’s left hand recklessly down, instinctively threw a straight power right hand which send Guerrero down and in serious trouble. Guerrero beat the count, but his legs were shot and he appeared woozy. Howard wasted no time when the action restarted, coming in with rapid power shots and sending Guerrero down and out, forcing an end to the contest.
Howard has been calling out Guerrero for five years, with bouts off and out during that time. Guerrero’s latest three opponents pulled out. Howard, who has been working hard in the gym for over a year, was ready to go at any time and his corner took the Guerrero bout. Howard, 11-1 with nine knockouts, would like a rematch with Harvey Jolly, or a fight with onetime Russell Peltz cruiserweight Garrett Wilson. Several years ago, he took the Jolly fight on short notice unprepared with family issues interfering with his concentration.
In the wide open cruiserweight division, Howard appears to only be a few steps away from a regional or world title shot. After this performance, it should not be long till he gets there.
Result: Brian Howard KO 1 Alex Guerrero, Cruiserweights (1:53)
Referee: Harvey Dock. Guerrero down twice in first, down and out the second time.
