Kell Brook vs. Diego Chaves Is Set

Go Diego Go! Kell Brook to Defend IBF Title Against Dirty Diego Chaves. Floyd Next?

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Yorkshire, UK (September 2, 2015)– Sheffield Arena in Yorkshire, United Kingdom, will host 35-0 Kell Brook’s third defense of his International Boxing Federation World Welterweight title on October 24, 2015 against dirty Argentinian fighter Diego Gabriel Chaves. Brook, 35-0 with 24 knockouts, should have his hands full with Chaves, 23-2-1 with 19 knockouts, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A former WBO Latino and interim WBA World Welterweight champion, Chaves was disqualified against Brandon Rios 12 months ago after landing an intentional elbow to the face of Rios. Combine that with points lost for head butting and holding, and British boxing fans will have plenty to boo about. However, Chaves has been in with Keith Thurman in a world title bout previously, and fought Timothy Bradley to a 12 round draw this past December. Chaves has a higher level of opposition than Brook, and Brook could find his latest challenger troublesome. Brook has beaten Shawn Porter, but must fight with aggression against Chaves, a ‘bring the fight to you’ aggressive style world class challenger.

Brook has to win by knockout, plain and simple. Thurman knocked out Chaves in the tenth round, while Bradley could do anything with him. Chaves was ahead by one point on two of three scorecards before getting disqualified against Rios in the ninth round of their bout in Las Vegas.

Chaves will come into England looking for the knockout, presuming the judges will not give it to him on foreign territory and on Brook’s home court of Sheffield in Yorkshire. This is a good assumption, but there are no guarantees. Ricky Burns was unable to win any of his last three bouts in his native Scotland, losing his WBO World Lightweight title in the process. Burns did win his last two bouts on Yorkshire territory.

A lot depends upon which version of Diego Chaves shows up. If the ‘dirty’ Chavez shows up and goes all out for for holding and hitting, hitting below the belt, head butting and elbowing, any of his other dirty tricks, he most certainly will lose points and eventually get disqualified. There probably will be a great deal of booing when Chaves shows up in Sheffield. Brook is predicted to win a clear 12 round decision in this affair. If Chaves comes in to win and fights cleanly, the bout could still be very close on the cards in a long power punching war. Brook likes to counter punch and hold. Chavez likely will not tolerate that as he has to take the fight to Brook, and force him to into jab exchanges and fight. Brook has stopped many opponents, but Chavez is a fighter of a different class. If any butts occur, they could turn the bout bloody and affect the outcome. Brook should win, but at the same time, he better be careful as Chavez is an extremely dangerous opponent who likes to butt.

The stakes are high, and could lead to financial gain. If Brook wins and goes to 36-0, Brook could be the fiftieth opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr., if Floyd gets past Andre Berto in their upcoming bout and decides to take one more bout to break Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 record. Were that to occur, Brook would have to travel to the MGM Grand to Las Vegas to fight Floyd at the MGM Grand. If Brook reaches 36-0, the timing would be perfect to unify the welterweight world titles with Floyd (if Floyd goes for Brook, and not Amir Khan after defeating Berto). At this point on the spectrum, Floyd versus Kell Brook would be Floyd’s toughest fight to date, owing to Floyd’s advanced age, superb condition aside, as he’s an older fighter at age 38.
