When The Referee Counts Ten, The Agony of Defeat
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Whenever a professional boxer enters the ring, the old adage ‘The Thrill of Victory, and The Agony of Defeat’ come into play. Some shall win, and some shall lose. A major loss can shatter many a boxer’s dream of winning a world title and realizing the big money, with solid management and sponsorship.
Being ringside in Atlantic City, New Jersey, at a new venue, The Playground Events Center at Caesar’s Atlantic City Saturday night for another ordinary boxing card, nonetheless my eyes and camera lenses always seem to be able to capture those moments in time and space when dreams become reality, and dreams go up in smoke. All of the young boxers on the ten bout card promoted by Silver Spoon Promotions prepared hard and trained hard. The odds still state ten shall win, and ten shall lose, barring occasional draws here and there.
Of the ten favored fighters on the red corner ‘A’ side, eight won and two lost. On the underdog ‘B’ fighter side, two won and eight lost. It was evident the ‘B Side’ fighters who won had worked harder than their ‘A side’ counterparts, and fought hard for their decision victories.
It is sometimes hard for a reporter to witness the end of a fighter’s hard work, and perhaps the end of a fighter’s career, but in the competitive sport of boxing it’s all part of the game. You have to be in the game to play the game. How hard it is when a fighter’s ego is broken and the referee must count to ten. In boxing, and in life, it is not when you go down, but it is the ability overcome the pain and get back up which makes us grow stronger. That is life.
