REAL COMBAT MEDIA WEEKLY BOXING REPORT – “Split Decision Edition“

By Zo Crooks,Real Combat Media Chicago Boxing Correspondent
Welcome to another weekly edition of the Real Combat Media Weekly Boxing Report “Split Decision”. This has been a wild and crazy week in boxing. We have everything from the Keith Thurman vs Luis Collazo recap to Floyd Mayweather back in camp for his upcoming September bout. Also the crazy ending between Mauricio Herrera and Hank Lundy. We also have news on Errol Spence, James DeGale, Rigo, Klitschko, Fury, and some news regarding the career of Carl “The Cobra” Froch. Without further delay….
Keith Thurman almost coughed up one against Luis Collazo….Literally!!!! Thurman was in control of the fight for the most part leading up to the 5th round of Saturday night’s PBC action on ESPN. At the end of the 5th round Collazo caught Thurman with a left hook to the body that alsmost ended the night! Man what if Collazo would’ve caught him like that in the beginning of the round??? The world would never know! Thurman walked away with an 8th round TKO after Collazo didn’t come out of the corner after suffering a cut over his right eye that impaired his vision.
The question is now did Thurman do enough to impress! To me Thurman displayed heart and resilience after getting hit with a body shot to the liver that would’ve put down 95% of boxers. I don’t know dude…maybe he did or maybe he didn’t. However he got the win. Thurman was in control of the fight outside of that one shot in the 5th. Put it like this….he looked a lot better than Khan did in his last outing. I would rather see Thurman against Floyd than Khan. To me Thurman is still a threat to anyone in the squared circle. They dont call him “One Time” for nothing!!!
Errol Spence Jr. was watching the Thurman fight Saturday night. His twitter line stole the show this weekend. “I’ll merk that boy”!!!! Spence made his statement loud and clear. “Da Truth” has spoken! There has been talks of Thurman vs Spence since Mayweather suggested that a bout between the two take place on his undercard for his upcoming September bout. That would be a decent matchup. I got Spence if that bout takes place.
Did anyone see the bout between Willie Nelson and Tony Harrison? On the undercard of Thurman vs Collazo this bout was much anticipated. During the press conference the verbal exchange between Nelson and Harrison was heated!!! Harrison came into the fight with high expectations. He was an undefeated prospect at the time with a record of (21-0-18 KOs). Too bad the fight didn’t live up to the hype. The fans were booing at one point. The fight was honestly terrible until Nelson put together a few punches in the 9th round and got Harrison out of there with a solid right to the head. Oh well….
Mauricio Herrera and Hank Lundy bout took place on HBO Latino Saturday night for the vacant NABP Super Lightweight Championship. This fight was weird for me from the jump. Maybe because I was watching the bouts in Spanish. However this fight only went 5 rounds because of cuts to both eyes of Hererra from accidental headbutts. Lundy came out in the first couple of round firing but by round 3 Herrera got his rhythm down and began countering well. The fights went to the scorecards and Herrera got the majority decision. In my opinion the bout could’ve went either way.
Signed, sealed, delivered….Wladimir Klitschko and Tyson Fury is set for October 24th at the Esprit Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany. Both sides reached an agreement minutes before the deadline of a purse bid was to take place. Both sides have been negotiating for weeks prior to the agreement. This will be one of the biggest heavyweight fights in recent years.
Money Mayweather is back in the gym training for upcoming September bout. Although the opponent is yet to be named Floyd is already back in the shed sharpening his tools. I’ve heard people say that it’s unfair because Floyd gets to train before his opponent does. When I hear stupid ish like this I ignore it! Just because the public doesn’t know who his next opponent is doesn’t mean that opponent doesn’t know. The opponent knows already. You don’t hit the Mayweather sweepstakes and don’t know about it! Floyd will let you know when he is ready for you to know!!!!
Sugar Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga are set to be reunited again. Their first fight took place in September 2008. Mosley stopped Mayorga in the 12th and final round with a second left in the fight. Mosley was ahead on most people scorecard by a point or two going into that final round. Just recently after a few heated words exchanged on twitter, it was announced that the two will meet again in the ring at the end of August. Maybe this will be a final bout for both fighters! I hope so!
My man Adrien Broner had a horrible week!!! First there was an AB sighting of him firing an AR-15 at the shooting range. #Aboutbullets Then AB posted on his instagram a picture of himself and saying “F$&% Boxing and all the rest of this political Bull s#$@ that’s going on. I feel like aint none of you muth@&%* on my side so side so fuck all yall…I’m doing me…#Comeseeme #Aboutbillionsordie. Also AB was sentenced to six months probation for a DUI in January. On top of that he is being sued by a woman that he named in video recalling the first time that he “caught crabs”. Honestly I love AB but I am concerned about his actions. He is a great talent and I believe deep inside that he is a great person. Im just a lil concerned. That’s all.
Gennady “GGG” Golovkin vs Andre “SOG” Ward at 164 lb catchweight? Word is Triple G promoter Tim Loeffler that his fighter will take on Andre Ward at a catchweight of 164 pound and a 50/50 split of the pie with GGG being the A-side of the deal. First and foremost I am not a fan of catchweights. I hate them! However at least we are hearing something of the matter when it comes to Triple G and SOG!
While we are on the topic of “Triple G”, Bernard Hopkins has recently come out and expressed interest in taking on Golovkin. B-Hop expressed his willingness to get in the ring with Triple G in an interview with Radio Rahim. Hopkins is now 50 years old and coming off a loss to Sergey Kovalev. I wouldn’t want to see this fight happen. Not at all. “He had a hell of a run, standing o-vay!” (In my Jay-Z voice)
James DeGale just signed to Al Haymon. DeGale announced on his twitter account that he is joining forces with Al Haymon. The IBF Super Middleweight Champion is with promoter Eddie Hearn but has signed on with Haymon as an adviser. Recently Haymon also signed undefeated IBF Super Bantamweight Champion from Northern Ireland, Carl Frampton Haymon aint playin with these boyz!!! #ThankyouAlHaymon #PBC #Freeboxing
Manny Pacquiao is looking for a return to the ring in 2016. According to Viva.co.id, Pacquiao was quoted saying, “I’m ready to fight next year.” As for his shoulder he also stated, “I’m fine, I can lift it.” Raising his right to show his shoulder has improved. Hmmmm Ok…
Huge ovation for Carl “The Cobra” Froch. Froch has officially announced that he will retire from the sport of boxing! Britain’s four time World Super Middleweight Champion hasn’t fought since May of 2014 to retain the WBA and IBF titles. Froch to twitter to make the following statement, “I’m officially retired from boxing. So much to say & so many people to thank. But for now, I just want to say thank you to my amazing fans.” The Cobra will most definitely missed in the squared circle.
