Las Vegas Super Fight! Floyd Mayweather versus Andre Berto at MGM Grand

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Las Vegas, NV (July 21, 2015)–This September 2015 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, at Grand Garden Arena at MGM Grand, professional boxing will host its super fight of all fights when Floyd Mayweather Jr. squares off against Andre Berto. After starting his career at 27-0 and being touted as the next Floyd, Berto is only 3-3 in his last six bouts. Still, Berto now holds the interim World Boxing Association Welterweight title after defeating Josesito Lopez in March 2015, so he is still a dangerous force in the highly competitive 147 pound welterweight division.

Floyd’s record now stands at 48-0, one win short of tying Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 mark. Rocky was a heavyweight whose unbeaten record has withstood the test of time, while Floyd is the best promoted high stakes superstar in the lower weights, and all of professional sports. Floyd holds the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association super, and World Boxing Organization versions of the 147 pound title at last glance. Beyond collecting the world championship belts like knickknacks, Floyd is still the best in the boxing game, and the biggest draw in professional sports. Floyd does not compare himself to Marciano. The two boxers represent completely different worlds an eras and qualities of opponent. Marciano came before Muhammad Ali, Floyd came after Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns. At what price comparison?

Contrary to popular opinion, this reporter expects Floyd versus Berto to thrill viewers rather than disappoint against Floyd. Having been unsuccessful is bouts with Victor Ortiz, Robert Guerrero and division gatekeeper Jesus Soto Karass, Berto is nonetheless a good candidate-to get stopped or knocked out-late in his bout against Floyd. This sort of ending is exactly what the bloodthirsty general public wants, and Floyd is going to provide it.

Contractual agreements between promoters and networks often stand in the way of big money matchups. Mega bouts between Floyd and either Thurman OR Shawn Porter, the other paper 147 pound paperwork champions of note, just might not be on the immediate horizon for this reason. Thurman did not look so good recently defeating Luis Collazo, and this reason might have motivated Floyd to take the Berto bout.

While Amir Khan might have seemed the best bout for Floyd on the table, the fact that the Europeans would have put up the cash still might not be reason enough for Floyd to leave the tax friendly land of Las Vegas and fight in Europe, where steroid and human growth hormone testing regulations may not be as stringent as they are in the United States. The current anti-doping requirements demanded by Floyd in Nevada set certain parameters some top boxers are unable to meet, despite the huge amount of money on the table.

Berto is clean. Berto should give a phenomenal accounting of himself for most of the bout, but in the end Floyd’s technical abilities will enable him to record yet another hard fought but clear cut 12 round decision in a 12 round world title bout. Floyd is still faster and sharper than Berto, and will outwork him from the outside while taking few chances. If Floyd can puncture Berto’s defenses significantly, a stoppage between rounds eight and twelve could occur. As to whether this will be Floyd’s last bout, Floyd says it will be, while Bernard Hopkins says Floyd will keep fighting as long as the money is on the table. Floyd is likely to beat Amir Khan. Shawn Porter and KeithThurman would be a rougher go for Floyd in 2016. What can this reporter say? Floyd works hard for the money.
