Philadelphia, PA (May 9th, 2015)– Amir Mansour has a fearsome reputation, and a muscular body which appears to be chiseled out of stone. On Friday evening, May 8, 2015, in the main event at 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, promoted by Russell Peltz Promotions, Brittany Rogers Bam Promotions, and Joe Hand Promotions, southpaw Amir Mansour settled for a unique 10 round defensive decision over hard hitting Joey Dawejko to win the vacant Pennsylvania State Heavyweight title in a bout experts and bookies never figured to go the distance.
Mansour, 42, now 22-1, 16 knockouts, Wilmington, Delaware, boxed a cautious first round with Dawejko, 24, now 14-4-2, seven knockouts, Philadelphia Pennsylvania. In round two, an accidental head butt from Dawejko to Mansour inadvertently cut Mansour off the corner of the right eye, and as the blood streamed down Mansour’s face, the sellout crowd of 1300 at 2300 Arena in Philadelphia went wild. The cut did not affect Mansour’s vision. In the third round, an accidental heads butt from Mansour on Dawejko inadvertently cut Dawejko above the inside of the left eye. Both corner cut men went wild for the remainder of the ten rounder working on these sensitive facial cuts, as a No-Contest was not called, and both fighters went for broke until the final bell.
As both fighters went into high defensive mode, Mansour managed to just pullthe bout out by moving around the ring and constantly throwing punches, even if they did not land or do any damage. Dawejko stuck to his game plan trap for all ten rounds, lurking along the ropes and baiting Mansour to come in and get hit by the right hand bomb. Mansour, wise to the fact Dawejko came in with four consecutive first round knockouts, did not fall for the trap. The trouble was Dawejko failed to let his hands go, even in the later rounds when it appeared the overly muscular Mansour would ‘lock up’. Referee Gary Rosato oversaw a clean bout (besides the accidental butts) and gave both fighters a chance to win. There was some holding in the later rounds as the fighters tired. Scoring appeared neutral and fair.
The 96-94 scorecard of ringside judge Dave Braslow appeared closest to correct. Real Combat Media scored the bout 96-94 for Mansour. Some of the rounds were close due to the lack of significant offense form both fighters, and could have shaken by a point or two in either direction. A rematch between these two fighters next year would not be farfetched if they wanted it. At age 24, Dawejko is still young, and as Mansour is from Delaware, the Pennsylvania State belt Mansour won is likely to become vacant anyway, if Dawejko still wants it. This was a great ESPN2 card and commentator Teddy Atlas, with the three televised bouts going the full scheduled 24 rounds.
If Mansour, 42, anticipates a step up bout next, now would be the time.Vyacheslav Glaskov, Tony Thompson, Chris Arreola, Bryant Jennings, or the winner of Alexander Povetkin, Deontay Wilder, or the winner of Ruslan Chagaev versus Francesco Pianeta would be decent matchups for Mansour later in 2015, after he heals and if he really wants any of these bouts. At age 24, Dawejko is still very young, and promoter Russell Peltz could give him another chance, perhaps against a fighter like Samuel Peter, Nagy Aguilera, Robert Hawkins or Dominic Guinn, the winner of Jason Bergman-Devin Vargas II.
