Golovkin vs Monroe Fight Preview
By George A. Dampeer, Washington DC/DE Correspondent
Los Angeles. CA (May 15th, 2015)– Two weeks removed from the grand flop Mayweather vs Pacquiao bout, HBO looks to make a streak of entertaining fights following the slugfest between Saul “Canelo” Alverez and James Kirkland with boxing’s most feared fighter in Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin and 2014 Boxcino Middleweight tournament winner Willie “The Mongoose” Monroe Jr for the interim WBC, IBO, WBA Middleweight championship.
Golovkin comes into the fight riding a 19 knockout winning streak to go along with his 32(29KOs)-0 record. Even a novice gambler could see where the safest bet to be placed, but Gennady choice in fighting Monroe was anything but. Anyone whose followed GGG’s fighting career knows that Gennady and his K2 promotion team takes on all comers, anywhere and any place. It’s been a part of his international folklore to take on any fighter that is willing to risk their record against his power which has struck fear and avoidance from the fighters he seeks to score the big money fights. Gennady however uses his situation to his advantage and does not bother getting frustrated. In a Q&A with ESPN GGG said the reason he wanted to fight Monroe was because he wanted to fight a slick boxing southpaw. He says he wants to get used to fighting ALL styles. The last “slick” boxer Gennady fought though didn’t hold up so well. Daniel Geale (whom fights Miguel Cotto June 6) was knocked out in the third round despite looking to take GGG into the later rounds . However, the Geale fight showed that a busy, defensively-aware fighter could tread water with the Kazakhstan national.
The embodiment of that type of fighter is Willie Monroe Jr. Willie is a defensively sound fighter with great boxing ability, and pin-point timing with his punches on fighters looking to come in. This was exemplified in his tournament final victory against Brandon Adams. Adams looked to get inside against “The mongoose” only to see why Monroe gained the name. Monroe Jr. boxed efficiently, forcing Adams to desperately leap-in in attack. It was at that point Willie was able to time Brandon Adams with clean, hard punches; as well as slip a lot of shots. That would be the trend for the rest of the night as Willie cruised to victory. It’s this type of performance Willie will need to attempt to spark a major upset. To his credit, Monroe could very well be the one to do so.
Along with boxing and keeping Gennady at bay Monroe would need to get Gennady’s attention with some hard punches to make GGG think of different approaches. The only problem with this is the fact that Monroe only has 6 KOs out of his 19 wins, which means Monroe’s activity will be key. He will need to consistently move and keep Gennady at a distance. The mongoose should not deter from setting traps for GGG to land power punches being the fact that he is the naturally bigger man and maybe as well in strength.
Both fighters come into the fight with extreme confidence that gives this fight a recipe to make a interesting fight to say the least. With HBO setting it’s best viewer records since 2006 at an estimated peak of 2.296 million viewers, a trend could be expected. If so, fans could be awarded another action-packed fight for the shortcomings of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.
