Brooklyn. NY (May 25, 2015)– On May 29, 2015 on Spike TV’s Premier Boxing Champions(PBC on Spike TV) WBC Silver Champion Amir “King” Khan(30-3, 19kos) will face American Chris “The Professor” Algieri(20-1, 8kos) in a 12 round Welterweight fight in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York at 9pm EST.
Algieri a former kickboxer and former WBO Champion at 140lbs last fought in November of 2014 in what was the highest profile fight of his career against Filipino superstar Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao(57-6-2 ,38kos) on HBO Pay-Per-View in Macau, China. Algieri was a heavy underdog and was dominated all 12 rounds and hit the canvas 6 times before ultimately losing a unanimous decision. Prior to the Pacquiao defeat Algieri won his first world title in a somewhat debatable decision over Ruslan “The Serberian Rocky” Provodnikov(24-4 ,17kos) in June of 2014 in which Algieri was also down multiple times. Provodnikov vs Algieri also took place in the Barclays Center. Algieri would vacate the title soon after to pursue a Pacquiao fight.
Now working with John David Jackson whom also trains WBO, WBA, and IBF 175lb Light Heavyweight Champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev(27-0-1, 24kos), Algieri hopes that he can as fans say “get out of the cage” something that former trainer Tim Lane could not accomplish.
Here’s what Algieri had to say about working with Jackson during the official Media Conference Call for Khan vs Algieri “It’s been a great training camp. We’ve been learning quite a bit. John has been bringing out a lot of aspects of my style, things I can do in the ring that I haven’t had an opportunity to show just yet. We’re both very excited about this fight, excited about what we’re going to be able to do on fight night the 29th. Learning new aspects in a sport I love has been an eye-opening experience and enjoyable one as well.”
The WBC Silver title at 147lbs Amir Khan holds is “suppose” to grant him a mandatory shot against current WBC champion at 147lbs Floyd “Money” Mayweather(48-0 26kos) yet it is uncertain if Mayweather will chose Khan as his last opponent for his farewell bout on September 12, 2015. Khan also has religious obligations that also play a part in “if” he can accept Mayweather’s challenge if he’s chosen.
Khan said this during the official media call –
“I’ve not ruled out. It’s possible I could fight in September, yeah. Ramadan is going to be a little bit earlier this year, so obviously it helps, gives me enough time to get the training done and everything. It can happen in September.”
Ramadan is an Islamic holy month and defined as “The ninth month in the Islamic calendar in which Muslims all over the world abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours. As a time to purify the soul, refocus attention on God, and practice self-sacrifice, Ramadan is much more than just not eating and drinking.”
Ramadan 2015 starts on June 17, 2015 and ends on July 17, 2015 which would be just under 2 months before Mayweather’s September 12, 2015 confirmed farewell bout. The total number of days between Saturday, May 30th, 2015(the day after Khan vs Algieri) and Saturday, September 12th, 2015 is 105 days. This is equal to 3 months and 13 days for Khan to prepare for Mayweather “if” he defeats Algieri on May 29, 2015. If Mayweather were to chose Khan as his final opponent under his Showtime/CBS deal Khan would have 57 days or 1 month and 26 days to train “if” he decided to start training camp after Ramadan ends July 17, 2015.
According to the math, Khan can enjoy some time off if he’s victorious against Algieri, commit to his religious obligations, and have a somewhat full camp depending on what training he does during Ramadan.
Khan’s last fought Devon “The Great” Alexander(26-3 14kos) on Showtime Championship Boxing in December of 2014. Khan showed amazing speed and footwork yet fans still yearned for more. “More” meaning a fight with a heavier puncher like Kieth “One Time” Thurman(25-0 21kos) or a rematch with Marcos Rene “Chino” Maidana(35-5 31kos). To Khans credit if he were to chose to fight in September he’d have fought 3 high profile fights in 10 months which is unusual for a fighter of his caliber.

The undercard was suppose to feature boxer/commentator Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi but he had to drop out 2 weeks prior due to a cut eye suffered during sparring. The co-feature will now be 25 year old Javier “El Abejon” Furtuna(27-0-1 20kos) of the Dominican Republic against 27 year old Bryan Vasquez(34-1 18kos) of Costa Rica for the WBA Super World Super featherweight title at 126lbs.
