Rios Finishes Alvarado & Video Highlights

By Eliezer Garcia, RCM NJ/NY Boxing Correspondent

Broomfield, Colorado (January 25th, 2015)– At the 1st Bank center, Alvarado and Rios meet for a third time. Like Gatti/Ward , this trilogy promised excitement. In their first bout Rios managed to knock out Alvarado by engaging him in a classic Rios slug fest. In the rematch Alvarado manage to engage Rios into a boxing match and won a unanimous decision. Coming into this third fight, the question was, who will show up on this night.

Coming into the rubber match Alvarado was arrested for possession of a weapon. Many observers believed this kind of distraction would hurt Alvarado in this fight. Unfortunately, on this night, those distractions became apparent.

From the opening bell Rios came in aggressive and bounced on Alvarado right away. Brandon Rios rarely gets credit for his defense on the inside. Using his head movement Rios landed massive uppercuts that would send Alvarado’s head back. As for Alvarado, he did not seem like he was mentally in the ring. His body language spoke like a man who was distraught.

This was a do or die fight for both fighters. Brandon Rios was coming off a very controversial fight with Diego Chavez and a unanimous decision loss to Manny Pacquiao. Alvarado (34-4, 23 Kos) on the other hand was coming off two punishing losses to Ruslan Provodnikov and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Rios knocked down Alvarado in the third round and Alvarado did not want to come out of his corner at the end of the third.

What’s next for Brandon Rios (33-2, 23 Kos)? Perhaps a match up with the Siberian Rocky Provodnikov, which many feel it would be another classic or a possible match up with Victor Ortiz, who Rios called out during his interview with Jim Lampley.
