Meet Super Bantamweight Danny Aquino, The Mexican Boxer Who Has Never Fought in Mexico

New York, NY (September 26, 2014)–Mexican Super Bantamweight prospect Danny Aquino is 16-2 with 10 knockouts. Pro boxing records are often suspect, as Aquino learned in his six round bout with 4-9-2 Dominican fighter Jhovany Collado. In reality, Collado is a hard puncher who has been on the short end of the stick in controversial decisions nine times. Still, the dangerous Collado beat world ranked Rafael Vazquez in 2012.
On September 20, 2014, at Resorts New World Casino in Queens, New York, Aquino showed the heart and courage of a champion to be. Taking a serious beating in the fourth round, Aquino got dropped twice by Collado, and it was not pretty to watch. Fighting for his life, Aquino’s forward momentum after a missed punch sent him to the canvas a third time. It appeared Collado struck him as Aquino was going down, but the referee ruled Aquino went down due his forward momentum from the missed punch. Collado hung on to win a six round majority decision which left the fight fans confused over how Aquino could have won. Aquino won because he came to fight, while Collado came to run, overall.
While Aquino still has a long way to go, the young Mexican boxer possesses one extraordinary characteristic: Aquino has never fought a professional bout in his native Mexico! While so many records are padded, particularly Mexican boxers in Mexico, Aquino has fought all of his 18 pro bouts either in the Dominican Republic or six American states. Aquino has to be the only Mexican boxer I know who has fought his entire career on the road. In my view, that takes guts and courage. Like Glen Johnson, Aquino is another ‘road warrior’ who has made his bread and butter under the most difficult of circumstances to gain recognition, and I salute him for it.
