Galarza Wins By Disqualification Over Rabbit Punching Bautista in Dirty War

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

New York, NY (September 21, 2014)– Dominican fighter Jonathan Batista, dressed in superman trunks, was anything but the caped hero against rising light middleweight prospect Frank Galarza in the co-main event of a nine bout card promoted by New Legend Boxing at Resorts New World Casino, on Saturday evening, September 20, 2014, broadcast over the internet on Go Fight Live. Aunique combined hybrid boxing card resulted from a postponed Brooklyn Dmitriy Salita boxing card two days earlier, which caused three bouts on the postponed card to be added to the New Legend card.

Galarza, now 15-0-2, nine knockouts, Brooklyn, New York, came forward with pressure and a plan against Batista, 14-4, seven knockouts. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. After two feeling out rounds, Galarza upped the stakes and began punching relentlessly to the body and to the head. A well-timed body shot from Galarza dropped Batista in a corner near the end of round three. From that point, the bout turned extremely dirty and got ugly.

Batista began rabbit punching to the back of the head, and hitting off the break, earning a one point deduction from referee Harvey Dock in round four. Batista continued the infractions. When Batista’s rabbit punching became continuous and flagrant, referee Harvey Dock signaled an end to the contest and awarded Galarza a win by disqualification.

It appeared the bout the eight round bout, shorted from the originally scheduled ten, would not go the distance anyway as Galarza was close to ‘closing the door’ and ending the bout. The bout could have been allowed to continue. However, championship referee Dock is one of those rare caliber referees who does not tolerate the nonsense, and sought to spare Galarza and the fans further misery. Dock acted wisely, preventing serious injury, when Batista, desperate and exposed, resorted to illegal dirty tactics and would not stop.

Result: Frank Galarza Win Disqualification 5 Jhonathan Batista, Light Middleweights
Referee: Harvey Dock. Batista down in third, disqualified for repeated fouling.

Resorts New World Casino Boxing Undercard

Referees: Harvey Dock, Johnny Callas, Steve Willis, Danny Schiavone

Trevis Hall Win 6 Angel Garcia, Junior Lightweights

Garcia down in third. Garcia, not wanting to fight Hall, ran a track marathon. A stinker.

Danny Aquino Win Majority Decision 6 Jhonny Collado, Featherweights (Co-Main Event)

16-2 Mexican featherweight Danny Aquino was down twice in the fourth round. Aquino was swinging wildly when his momentum sent him to the canvas a third time, ruled a slip by referee Johnny Callas, though some at ringside though a Collado punch was the cause.

Collado’s bruised right eye affected the scorecards.Collado appeared to outbox Aquino and felt he won the bout. The scorecards read 57-56 Aquino, 57-56 Aquino, 56-56 draw.

A similar situation occurred in Sugar Ray Robinson versus Carmen Basilio II on March 25, 1958, whereby Robinson regained the World Middleweight title. Basilio’s left eye was swollen shut. Two judges had it 72-64 and 70-63 Robinson. A third judge had it 69-66 Basilio. After the bout, Basilio reflected the two judges who voted for Robinson were looking more at his damaged eye, rather than the technical aspects of the bout he felt he won, affecting how they scored the bout.Collado was the busier fighter, circling nonstop as Aquino did not cut off the ring. Perhaps Collado’s running movement also affected the scorecards. It was hard to tell.

Jose Del Valle Win Split Decision 6 Floriano Pagliara, Super Featherweights

Del Valle Down in first. 59-54 for Pagliara, 57-56, 57-56 for Del Valle. Strange scorecards.

Jay Rodriguez TKO 1 James Jenkins, Cruiserweights (0:50)

Tommy Gallagher trained Rodriguez goes to 3-0-1, three knockouts, drops Jenkins fast.

Devaun Lee Win 4 Troy Artis, Super Middleweights

3-0 Lee wins very close bout with Artis, decided by late knockdown of Artis in final round.

Alantez Fox Win 6 Johnathan Garcia, Middleweights

Tall boxer Fox could not dent granite-chinned shorter Garcia, so jabbed and moved to win.

Dimash Niyazov Split Draw 4 Jamell Tyson, Welterweights (38-36, 36-38, 37-37)

Niyazov down in first round. Tyson ruled down in third round when he briefly went down and up. One point appeal possible to New York State Athletic Commission, as Tyson says he never touched the canvas. Referee Willis, who referred to ringside before counting the ‘knockdown’, considered the knockdown ruling of Tyson was a mistake after the bout.

Ringside officials, of course, also have a bird’s-eye view of the inside of the ring, and could be right or wrong as well. In previous boxing events at Resorts New World Casino, the aerial ring lights were blazing, creating glare obstructing a judge’s ability to judge bouts.

At this event, the aerial ring lights were dimmed, creating better visibility for judging, but reporters at ringside could not tell if Tyson’s knees or gloves touched the canvas or not in the split second occurrence. Fight footage might not answer the question. In this reporter’s view, this bout is a good candidate for an appeal ruling of ‘No-Contest’ for the above mentioned reasons. Without the knockdown ruling, Tyson wins the bout by split decision.

Celebrities in Attendance included TV commentator Harold Lederman, and boxers Junior Jones, Dmitriy Salita, Will Rosensky, Jarrell Miller, Amanda Serrano and Cindy Serrano.
