No Doubt Austin Trout Twice Takes Count, Comes Back to Win and Almost Knocks Daniel Dawson Out

Temecula, CA (August 23, 2014)– In an ‘Oddball Jones’ type bout featuring three knockdowns, and a twisted calf muscle, former World Boxing Association World Light Middleweight champion Austin Trout survived two shocking knockdowns in the third round to drop Daniel Dawson in the eighth round and win a unanimous 10 round decision at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.
Trout, now 27-2, 14 knockouts, Las Cruces, New Mexico, coming off back to back 12 round decision losses in WBA and WBC world title bouts to Miguel Cotto and Saul Alvarez, appeared to win every round except the third round. Trout landed consistent jabs and power shots which told the story. However, Trout got in southpaw trouble in the third round trying to land his left hands. Dawson, 40-4-1, 26 knockouts, Perth, Australia, landed counter straight right hands which put Trout on the seat on his pants in the third round, but failed to floor the gas pedal afterwards to score the third knockdown and finish Trout.
In round seven, Trout stepped on Dawson’s front foot, injuring Dawson’s left calf as the left calf muscle twisted. Dawson survived the remaining three rounds, but took severe punishment from Trout, who dropped him in the eighth round and kept nailing a limping slower Dawson with power shots.
Trout’s major problem is not talent, it is ring rust. If Trout fought more than once a year, the going would be easier as he has the talent. In any case, Trout should still be able to beat Jermall and Jermell Charlo, Demetrius Andrade, James Kirkland, Vanes Martirosyan, Joshua Clottey, Carlos Molina, Cornelius Bundrage, Ishe Smith and other contenders in the light middleweight division on technical skill if he stays active and does the work.
Result: Austin Trout Win 10 Daniel Dawson, Light Middleweights
Scoring: 97-90, 97-90, 97-90 for Austin Trout. Referee: Jack Reiss
