UFC 176 MAIN EVENT IS CANCELLED WITH JOSE ALDO’S INJURY

By MMAFighting.com

Chad Mendes will have to wait a little longer to get his second shot at the UFC title.

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo has suffered an injury that will force him out of his seventh UFC title defense on August 2 in Los Angeles, California, against the Alpha Male product, MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani reported on Wednesday’s edition of UFC Tonight on FOX Sports 1.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the news, but there’s no word yet on a new main event for UFC 176.

Mendes earned his second UFC title shot with five straight victories inside the Octagon since suffering a first-round knockout loss to Aldo in 2012. Aldo, unbeaten since 2005, last defended his featherweight title in a unanimous decision win over Ricardo Lamas in February.

Update: Nova Uniao announced on Wednesday night that Aldo has suffered a shoulder and cervical spine injury after being taken down in training on July 1. According to the release, Aldo started physical therapy Wednesday and won’t be able to train for three weeks, when he will be examined again for the cervical spine injury.
