Nonito Donaire Earns Title in an Ugly Fashion in China

Macau, China (June 1st, 2014)– At the Venetian Resort Nonito Donaire(33-2-21 KO’s) won a technical decision on all three judges cards over WBA featherweight Champion Simpiwe Vetyeka. (26-3-16 KO’s).The fight was stopped at the end of the fourth round due to an accidental headbutt.
Donaire earned his 126-pound championship bout in his fourth weigh class. Through out the bout there were a series of head butts, which are very unusual for two orthodox fighters. In the first round a head butt sent Donaire to the floor in agony. Despite the cut Donaire continued to press the aggression in the bout. In the fourth round Donaire was up against the ropes and landed a perfectly timed left hook that sent Vetyeka to the canvas. It was after that Fourth round where Donaire was unable to see out of his left eye and the decision was made to stop the bout. During the post fight interview Donaire was unable to open his eyes.
Donaire said “ I wanted to keep on fighting, but could no longer see, Veteyeka is a great fighter and he deserves a rematch, I will give him a rematch “
Many fans agree with a rematch to take affect, the South African Simpiwe Vetyeka deserves a chance to try to win back his title
Also on the “Featherweight Fury” card, Evgeny Gradovich (19-0) retained his IBF title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Alexander Miskirtchian (24-3-1), and Nicolas Walters (24-0) stopped Vic Darchinyan (39-7-1) in the fifth round.
