By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
Recently, Russian Amateur Cruiserweight champion Alexey Zubov spoke with Real Combat Media after registered his third consecutive first round knockout. Now 3-0, three knockouts, the tall imposing native of Magnitogorsk, Russia, Zubov met with Real Combat Media after scoring a first round stoppage of Glenn Thomas on Dmitriy Salita’s undercard at the Millenium Theater on May 15, 2014, in Brighton Brach Brooklyn, New York. Zubov is training with Charles Mooney with his Russian comrade Matt Korobov in California.
Real Combat Media: “Did you start boxing as a cruiserweight?”
Alexey Zubov: “No, I started fighting as an amateur heavyweight. I later switched to cruiserweight, and did much better boxing as amateur at the lower weight.”
Real Combat Media: “What were some of your amateur achievements?”
Alexey Zubov: “I won the Russian cruiserweight amateur championship, 200 pounds open. I won international amateur cruiserweight tournament championships at 200 pounds open seven times. Overall I won 100 of 120 amateur bouts in Russia and in Europe at cruiserweight and heavyweight.”
Real Combat Media: “How did you meet Dmitriy Salita?”
Alexey Zubov: “I met Dmitriy in Detroit when I was in the training camp of Jonathon Banks. Then I met Dmitriy in Detroit again when he was preparing for his last fight with Gabriel Bracero.
Real Combat Media: “What is your ultimate goal?”
Alexey Zubov: “I want to be world cruiserweight champion in two years!”
Real Combat Media: “Why come to the United States from Russia?”
Alexey Zubov: “Because America is a mecca for pro boxing. In Russia we have a great amateur school, but probably not as good (as the professional training is in the United States).”
Real Combat Media: “Who are your best friends over here?”
Alexey Zubov: “I’m friends with Matt Korobov and Sergey Kovalev. Matt helped bring me to the United States and helped me with my career. Matt and I have the same trainer, Charles Mooney. Matt gave me my coaches and my team, which are the same as Korobov’s. I am so happy (to be able to) I work with these guys.”
