Matthew Saad Muhammad Takes The Ten Count, Dies of Lou Gehrig’s Disease at 59

New York, NY (May 26. 2014)–Philadelphia Light Heavyweight Matthew Saad Muhammad, also known as Matt Franklin, who fought in five North American Boxing Federation and 10 World Boxing Council World championship fights, has died at age 59 of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Saad Muhammad held the WBC world title from 1979 to 1982. His final ring record was 49-16-3 with 35 knockouts. A member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Saad Muhammad later worked as a trainer. As of July 2010, Saad Muhammad was homeless and living in a shelter in Philadelphia, in part caused by his declining health and financial situation. Saad Muhammad is listed as number 24 on Ring Magazine’s list of the 100 greatest punchers of all-time.
