No Fight in Moscow Cruiserweight Mess! Lebedev Has WBA Title, Jones Still WBA Champ in Recess and Denies He Failed Russian Drug Tests, Card Held Anyway
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
Moscow, Russia(April 28th, 2014)–There was no rematch held for the World Boxing Association cruiserweight title this past weekend. Guillermo Jones did not make good on his promise of a repeat execution of Denis Lebedev in Russia. Jones, the WBA cruiserweight champion in recess, defeated Lebedev to regain the WBA title in Russia last year by knocking him out in the eleventh round. After the bout, the Russians claimed Jones failed the drug tests. If this was so, why did the Russian side not claim issues with Jones drug tests before the title bout? Ultimately Jones still got the win, but Lebedev got the title back.
Now the Russians have claimed Jones failed drug test ‘Sample A’ and the rematch scheduled in Moscow did not take place. There is no statement yet on the results of ‘Sample B’, the second backup testing sample. According to WBA championship procedures, the promoter of the fighter in question (in this case Don King) must challenge the ‘Sample A’ findings of the Swiss lab, and request the results of ‘Sample B’ be processed and tested, in the hopes of obtaining a contradictory result with the second sample which clears the fighter. Both of the fighter’s representatives were notified of applicable rules and procedures in place, and the options available.
Jones claimed in Moscow after the revelation that despite the Russian claims, he did not understand what he was being accused of, and stated he was clean. According to Jones, the Russians were afraid he was going to win again by knockout, and because they were afraid, the Russians were inventing the test discrepancies. Jones noted copies of the results were not received by his corner, and claimed the Russians were being dishonest.
The six bout undercard went on as scheduled on Friday evening, April 25, 2014, at the Dynamo Palace of Sports at Krylaskoye, in Moscow, Russia, with all six of the favored Russian prospect boxers getting impressive wins on the home territory.
