Brooklyn, NY (April 9th, 2014)– It has often been said that adversity breeds the best in men. Consider the unique case of Brooklyn’s Rafael Vazquez, who holds the World Boxing Association Fedelatin Super Bantamweight title. From a high weight of 133 pounds to his current weight of 121 pounds, Rafael Vazquez is set to rise in the Wilfredo Gomez lower weight division, the super bantamweights. Vazquez, like Gomez, is from Puerto Rico. There the comparisons end, however.
Vazquez has had to contend with a seriously ill wife and an autistic child. Vazquez was trailing in his fight with Leon Moore, the fight hopeless lost on the cards, when he knocked out Moore in the ninth round of a bout which almost didn’t finish because the ring ropes kept collapsing.
The 11-1 record of Vazquez with nine knockouts is most deceiving. Somehow, for some reason, Vazquez is a fight who stands out for one particular reason: this writer perceives Vazquez as being desperately hungry. Hunger, it should be noted, is not something a fighter just gets. It’s the burning hunger to win, to feed one’s family, to succeed, to have the desire to reach the top. It’s a certain something I believe Vazquez has which will propel him soon into a world title fight.
Promoters Felipe Gomez and Kevin O’Sullivan have worked with a number of fighters at New Legend Boxing, but Vazquez is the most unusual fighter I have yet seen in their stable. Vazquez doesn’t fit any stereotypes or profiles, yet remains serious and firm in his conviction to conquer the super bantamweight division. Indeed, it isn’t the number of fights a fighter has, it is who he fights, how he trains, and the motivating reasons why he fights. For some reason which defies logic, Rafael ‘Dynamite’ Vazquez is a puzzle with pieces which seem to fit. The boxing public may not know who he is yet, but I believe they will soon, as Vazquez is knocking at the door of the World Boxing Association for a world title fight. He is already ranked ninth in the world by the WBA, and his stock is rapidly rising en route to the top.
