An insane, violent and maddening scene erupted on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at the annual New York City Police Department versus the Fire Department of New York annual charity hockey game. In the second period, with the score tied at 3-3, tensions flared and the benches emptied, as everybody began fist fighting and wrestling with each other. The crowd in attendance fanned the emotional flames by shouting ‘PD sucks’ and ‘Dunkin Donuts’ as the dramatic scene went from law abiding to lawlessness, from camaraderie to anarchy on ice and wild violence. After numerous injuries and numerous penalties were assessed, the NYPD went on to win the annual charity game 8-5, breaking a five game losing streak in the annual rivalry. It’s hard to say from the video who or what precisely started the mayhem, in perhaps the best New York City area indoor sports brawl since Riddick Bowe versus Andrew Golota at Madison Square Garden on July 11, 1996.
