Tecia Torres Interview

By Zach Heim, RCM MMA Correspondent

Tecia “The Tiny Tornado” Torres has a 4-0 record with wins over Felice Herrig, Rose Namajunas, Paige Vanzant, and Kaiyanan Rain.  Now at just 24 years old she is one of the first women in the UFC 11 pound weight class.  I got the chance to ask her some questions and she had some great answers.

RCM:What is it like to be one of the first women signed in the Strawweight division in the UFC?

Tecia:It’s so amazing. All of my hard work throughout the years has paid off. My childhood dreams are being lived each day. It really shows how one should never stop chasing their dreams.

RCM:What has been your favorite or most memorable fight so far?

Tecia:Probably my most recent fight vs Felice. I fought someone whom I idolized when I began as an amateur. Defeating her made a statement for me as a contender for the belt and in the end earned me a spot in the UFC and TUF20.

RCM:Which fight did you learn the most from?

Tecia:My fight with Rose. Prior to this fight I was working fulltime. I knew In order to beat her I had to take fighting to the next level. I decided to drop my job and put 100 % into my fight life. It really made the difference in my fight. I won the fight but it was a constant battle. She was definitely my toughest opponent to date. I learned a lot and have mixed up my game a lot since then.

RCM:What fight do you want first in the UFC? Do you know when it will be?

Tecia:My first fight will be within the TUF20 show. I don’t have anyone specific I want to fight 1st. All I know is that I will be ready for each and every one of the 15 other girls.

RCM: Are you a full time fighter?

Tecia:Yes. Happily.

RCM:What are some of your hobbies outside of the cage?

Tecia:I love being with my friends. Dinner, girl’s night, the beach, food, my family.

RCM:If you weren’t fighting what do you think you would be doing?

Tecia:I would work in the government or criminal justice field. I graduated college in 2010 with my B.S in Criminal Justice and Sociology.

RCM:Who is your favorite training partner and why?

Tecia:All of my girls at ATT. We have a great group and all are so diverse that I get a good look of different styles. Plus we have a good amount of 125 and 135 guys that help us girls out too.

RCM:Did you or do you have any role models in the sport?

Tecia: My karate instructor growing up was like a 2nd dad to me. He really pointed me in all the right directions in life. I owe a lot to him as a person, friend, & mentor.

RCM: Who has been the most influential person in your life? Why?

Tecia: My mom and grandma. Both are strong women and have gone thru so much in their lives. Each have given me many reasons to love them endlessly. They have always supported my dreams and decisions.

It’s going to be a great season of TUF.  The ladies always bring it and have exciting fights.  This could be the most exciting season of all time.   You can also follow Tecia Torres on Twitter @TeciaTorres you can also follow RCM US MMA Correspondent Zach Heim on Twitter @Zheim82.
