Bellator-110

Bellator MMA 110 Recap

By Zach Heim, RCM MMA Correspondent

Uncasville, CT (March 1st, 2014)– Bellator showed again tonight that they are not just another mma promotion.  A night full of exciting action to kick off season 10 with the start of their featherweight tournament and the final four of their light-heavy weight tournament.

The main card was kicked off with Des Green facing off with Mike Richman for a spot in the final four of the feather weight tournament.  The first round was a fairly uneventful beside Richman getting poked in the eye 59 seconds into the round.  Des Green did score a take down and landed a couple of good shot before Richman was able to pop back up to his feet.  It did look as though Green hurt his right ankle in the round though.  Green dominated the second round having Richman in side control for well over three minutes.  Landing some big knees to the body of Richman and also peppering him with elbows and shot to the head.  The final round was fought on the feet and although Des Green had a five inch reach advantage Mike Richman was able to control the round and push the pace much like he did in the first.  However Des Green did advance to face Will Martinez in the semi-finals with a unanimous decision victory.

Diego Nunes squared off with Matt Bessette also to see who would move on in the featherweight tournament.  Diego was able to control the round as he was held Bassette down and pushed him against the cage.  When Bassette did try to attack Nunes hit him with a flying knee in the middle of the cage.  Bassette was able to rock Nunes but didn’t attack like he should or could have.  Nunes was able to wrap Matt up and clear the cob webs.  After that they just traded big hard shot the rest of the round.  With Nunes getting a takedown with 10 seconds left in the second round.  The third round was nothing short of action packed with both fighters moving forward and landing kicks and punches.  Nunes was able to jump in and out landing some big shot but Bessette did land some good head kicks along the way.  Matt Bessette will move on to fight Daniel Weichel in the semifinals of the feather weight tournament with a split decision victory in front of a hometown crowd.

In the semifinals of the light heavyweight tournament Mikhail Zayats took on King Mo.  Each fighter looked to being trying to land a big shot in the first round.  King Mo used good head movement and level changes to avoid Zayats punches but wasn’t able to land much in doing so.  The second round had a little bit more action as Zayats came out with a flurry in the first minute of the round but wasn’t able to do any damage.  King Mo did get Mikhail down on his second of two attempts in the round.  Mo landed some good knees and a few punches but nothing to damaging.  King Mo was able to control the first couple of minutes of the third round using his amateur wrestling to control Zayats and land some good knees to his thigh.  The second half of the round was much like the first two a somewhat uneventful kickboxing match with both fighters landing shot but doing no damage.  The judges did give King Mo a unanimous decision victory moving him to the light heavy weight tournament.

The main event saw Christian M’Pumbu go at it with a legend of the sport in Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.  It was a slow first round with M’Pumbu trying to stay away from Rampage and eventually getting Rampage against the fence.  Big John split the two because of lack of action.  That was the beginning of the end.  M’Pumbu slipped and went to the canvas and Rampage attacked.  Rampage landed three punches the first of which put Christian to sleep.  During the post-fight interview King Mo got into the cage and the two almost came to blows.  They were separated by several security personnel.  Rampage said he is going to put King Mo to sleep next.

If you are still thinking all the good fight are in the UFC then you have not watched a Bellator event.  Tonight’s nights fights were nothing short of amazing.
