Cuban Light Heavyweight Prospect Umberto Sevigne Scores Spectacular and Only Knockout of the Night on Iron Mike Tyson’s KO Kings of Tomorrow Card

By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent

At age 35, Cuban defector Umberto Savigne, a light heavyweight fighting out of Miami, Florida, has a record of 12-1 as a professional, with nine knockouts. Savigne also has the distinction of scoring the only knockout of the night on Iron Mike Tyson’s KO Kings of Tomorrow boxing card at the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on February 12, 2014. Considering his page, he should get his wins in and fight for one of the alphabet world titles soon, if Tyson moves Sevigne correctly in the next year or two.

An overhand power shot by Savigne did the damage, knocking out Maxell Taylor at 1:11 of the second. Clearly Savigne is worthy of better opposition. Savigne knew how to close the bout out quickly, using pinpoint power shots before landing the coup de gras to finish Taylor. While some KO Kings most certainly represent the future of tomorrow, Sevigne is a knockout king of today, and the man of the moment. Sevigne’s record includes one upset loss to the well-traveled cruiserweight Harvey Jolly in his second pro bout. Since the Taylor bout went off at cruiserweight, Sevigne seems poised for a rematch with Jolly.

Sevigne was the 2000 Cuban National championships Gold medalist at light heavyweight, and a 1999 Gold medalist at light heavyweight at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada. He joined a number of Cuban boxers who defected in order to turn pro during amateur athletic competitition outside of Cuba.
