UFC 165 RESULTS & POST PRESS CONFERENCE

By: Miguel Sanchez, RCM MMA Correspondent

Toronto, Ontario(September 21, 2013)–  The UFC returned to Toronto Canada on Saturday Night  and for the most part did not disappoint. It was a night where we saw two of the best fighters in the middleweight division battle it out in a very close fight.
Following one of the best fights so far this year Dana White and the fighters from last night spoke with the media and went over many pressing topics.
  • Noticeably both Jones and Gustafsson were not in attendance. Both were at a local hospital following the intense back and forth 5 round battle.
  • Dana was asked numerous times if a rematch is in the works, per Dana he needs to wait for both Jones and Gustafsson to recoup then make a decision.
  • Dana was very impressed by the takedown defense of the challenger.
  • Eddie Wineland was asked what he felt about the stoppage against Barao. He thought it was stopped prematurely.
  • Dana was asked what was next for Barao. He would like to see him and Dominick Cruz, however it depends on if Cruz is %100. If not they have to see what they do as far as the Interim title.
  • It was asked if Cruz Vs Barao for Superbowl, but again depends on Cruz and his condition.
  • After Brendan Schaub’s submission win, Dana was quiet but seemed to have a fight in works for him already. No confirmation was made.
  • Dana stated that Gustafsson’s stock has risen, many didn’t know who he was coming into the fight but they know him now.
  • Dana was asked if Barao if the UFC’s Floyd Mayweather, while not saying that he was, Dana did praise the champion for being undefeated for 8 years. He doesn’t get the respect he deserves as a champion.
  • Dana was so into the fight he stopped keeping score. He said the crowd was on their feet from start to finish.
  • It was pointed out that Jon Jones told the cage side doctor not to stop the fight.
  • Dana was not aware that Greg Jackson was not cornering Jon Jones. Apparently, he was not selected to be one of the three corner men.
  • Dana closed up the conference by confirming a UFC press tour for Silva Vs Weidman II. It starts in Los Angeles California on Monday September 23, 2013.
Last night overall was a decent night of fights. The main card suffered a low moment when Carmon and Philippou almost put the entire arena to sleep with Carmon’s best impression of GSP. Dana even tweeted and the he woke up in time to watch the Mitrone Vs Schaub match. Luckily the last three fights of the night did not disappoint.
It was refreshing to see Jon Jones in a fight, not just steam rolling through his opponent. I am not a huge Jon Jones fan however he did gain my full respect as a fighter. He never gave up and was in the fight until the very end. Gustaffson had his night also and in no way is a loser. If anything he gained a bigger fan base and will come back stronger. Jones vs Gustafsson rematch? It must happen, and most likely will.
