Golovkin makes Macklin look Easy. Is Sergio Next?
By Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent, Tom Mauriello
Mashantucket, Connecticut (June 30, 2013)–It what was suppose to be his toughest test to date, Gennaday “GGG” Golovkin (27(24 Kos)-0) wasted no time taking Matthew Macklin (29(20 Kos)-5) out in the third round of their HBO headliner via a vicious body shot that sent Macklin crumbling to the canvas. The shot was so brutal that Macklin stayed on the mat under doctor supervision for several minutes before being helped to his feet.
This performance proves without a shadow of a doubt that GGG is the truth. Macklin, who was able to put Sergio Martinez to the canvas, and take the champion into the later rounds had nothing in his arsenal to match the freak that is Gennaday Golovkin. At the end of round 1, Golovkin sent Macklin flying into the ropes with a hard power shot which was just the beginning of the end for the Irishmen. He was cut in round two and stopped in three with one of the best body shots I have seen in recent fights.
Golovkin is the scariest fighter in boxing today. He has power in both hands, with a solid amateur pedigree with serious boxing skill as well. This latest victory leaves boxing fans with a thirst to see him take on the division leader, and top 5 pound for pound fighter Sergio Martinez.
Martinez, who has been knocked down in each of his last three fights might not be so quick to jump on this fight. Promoter Lou Dibella was even not sure of the future of his fighters when asked about a possible show down stating “This kid is an animal” referring to GGG.
Martinez has proven he can be hit, and put down, but still carries an un orthodox style that can bring the Kazakhstan native into the later rounds where he is untested. From what I saw tonight, this will not be an easy task as Golovkin just gets better with each outing. Either way, I look forward to seeing more of GGG. He is great for the sport, and can be HBO’s new poster boy in the war against ShowTime along side Andre Ward.
On the undercard we saw undefeated South African prospect Thomas Oosthuizen (21(13 Kos)-1)was out boxed and out classed by American Brandon Gonzales (18(10 Kos)-0)who may or may not of been a training partner for Andre Ward, was un able to get a clear answer from Max Kellerman regarding that. You cannot say that Gonzales was robbed considering he did not lose, but he certainly deserved a win after using his quick feet and superior boxing skills to put a hurting on the 6’4 monster.
Willie Nelson (21(12 Kos)-1) was tested and put Into a fight against Luciano Cuello (32(16 Kos)-3) en route to his Unanimous Decision Victory. Nelson was drawn into a rugged fight by the smaller fighter, and was un-able to use his towering frame to dominate the action as some may have thought.
