Lucas Matthysse Destroys Peterson in Three, Wins Danny Garcia Opportunity
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Correspondent
Atlantic City (May 19h, 2013)– Light Welterweight Lamont Peterson, fighting the biggest fight of his career at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in the main event on May 18, 2013, began the bout throwing fast jabs backing up and appeared effected with the fast start. Matthysse, who had two and a half months preparation, figured out the BoxRec number one quickly, and won his ‘Cherry Garcia’ shot at Danny Garcia, with the winner perhaps getting the golden payday money shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr. in early 2014 in Showtime.
Lamont Peterson moved counterclockwise to avoid Lucas Martin Matthysse’s left hook. Ultimately, Peterson got dropped in the second round, and twice in the third round by Lucas Matthysse’s dynamic punching power. Peterson opted to stand in front of Matthysse as an adjustment and try to slug it out with Matthysse, the boxer versus the puncher. The end came at 2:14 of the third round, with referee Steve Smoger. Peterson got destroyed, as Matthysse retained his interim World Boxing Council Light Welterweight world title. Peterson appeared to get hit several times in the back on the head, which Smoger warned him for. Peterson felt he could have fought on when Smoger stopped it. However, it appeared Smoger made the right call, as Peterson was totally outclassed, and when he his the floor the third time, he was done. Peterson had simply accepted he could not escape from Matthysse’s walk forward cutting off the ring pressure, so he tried to slug it out with him. No dice to that strategy as Matthysse’s left hook placement and power was pinpoint accurate and lethal. Peterson had no answer and no place to hide, then ultimately no chance.
Matthysse stated he wanted to fight Danny Garcia next. “Yes, absolutely. Golden Boy and Al Heymon will get me the fight. My two American losses (split decisions to Zab Judah and Devon Alexander), I am grateful for them; because I knew I had to win the way I did (in the United States today). I am grateful for my daughter, and all the Argentinian and Latin American fans that came out in support of me today!”
Matthysse, Buenos Aires, Argentina, is now 34-2, 32 knockouts. Peterson, Memphis, Tennessee, who showed up a pound over the light welterweight weight limit at 141 pounds, causing his International Boxing Federal World Light Welterweight title to not be at stake, fell to 31-2-1, 15 knockouts. Peterson still has the opportunity to defend his IBF world title later this year, but his chin and defenses have been exposed.
