Jason Thompson and The Red Badge of Courage
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Correspondent
New York, NY (May 23, 2013)– Light middleweight fighter Jason Thompson of New York City has a losing record of 5-6-3, with four knockouts. A real life ‘Rocky Balboa’, an underdog fighting the promoter’s fighters, the 32 year old Thompson has faced seven unbeatens in his past nine fights. By the venues, and the judges, the odds are against the underdog. Thompson has fought in the same venue twice in his career, Brooklyn and Huntington, New York. At this point in the game, Thompson must be ready to fight wherever he fights, from Newark to Atlantic City, from the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida, from Queens to Tampa, from Rochester to Youngstown, Ohio.
Thompson began his career 3-1, losing only to welterweight contender Mike Jones in the professional debut of Jones in Philly. Jason blew away two unbeaten pretenders, Marcus Hall and Henry White, in the first round, his last wins in 2007 and 2009.
Thompson was unable to beat three other unbeatens, Jonathan Gonzalez, Sadam Ali and Steve Martinez. Thompson was able to draw with Marcus Willis, Boyd Melson and Frank Galarza. None of these fights were walks in the park.
Looking back at the Galarza bout, a seesaw affair with the tempo of the bout going back and forth, Thompson hung tough. Galarza tired in the later rounds after being unable to put Thompson away. At this point, superior conditioning kicked in, and Thompson was in the house in the later rounds, apparently winning the last threes or keeping them very close as Galarza took some hard shots and faded. Galarza, a Brooklyn favorite who frequently fights the fight of the night, and Thompson, both made a go of it and tried hard to win. The crowd appreciated the effort of both fighters. The area judges did too, which made Thompson’s draw with Galarza all the more impressive. Galarza is a tough unbeaten prospect who gives nothing away.
Thompson will definitely get more fights after his performance with Galarza. Jason Thompson is a fighter you do not know, and may hear nothing about in the future. On May 4, 2013, at Resorts World Casino Aqueduct Raceway, Jason Thompson showed the fight fans in attendance the true red badge of courage. You cannot give a heart, no matter how hard you train the fighter. Jason Thompson has a beautiful red heart. He fought his heart out to the final bell, giving and taking. From the viewpoint of this sports reporter, beautiful. Forget your record, forget the odds, come in to win and do your best. That’s all anybody can ask for. Give a good show.
