Guillermo Jones Knocks Out Denis Lebedev, Reclaims WBA Cruiserweight Title

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Correspondent

Moscow, Russia (May 18th, 2013)– The issue of who the true World Boxing Association World Cruiserweight champion is has been settled by 41 year old Guillermo Jones, WBA champion in recess. Jones knocked the ‘other’ WBA champion, Denis Lebedev, on May 17, 2013,  in Moscow, Russia.

Using reach advantage to perfection from the outside, Jones brutalized the right eye of southpaw Denis Lebedev in the first round, cutting it, swelling it and disfiguring it early on. Coming forward with pressure and attempting to cut off the ring, while boxing out of range, Jones turned the battle of WBA Cruiserweight World Champion versus WBA Cruiserweight World Champion into a war of game plan, which Jones executed successfully.

Referee Stanley Christodoulou appeared not to have the option of stopping this bout, as the Lebedev corner and the Russian Boxing Commission wanted the bout to continue. Lebedev threw a vast array of power shots, and appeared to win rounds perhaps by punch volume. Strangely, not a single power shot or punch bothered Jones in the slightest, who just walked through Lebedev’s blows without being bothered in the slightest.

Guillermo continued to walk Lebedev down, pinpoint targeting his right eye with right hand leads, and battering it senseless. The bout should have been stopped early, but it wasn’t in Russian territory. As it was, Jones did enough damage not only to end Lebedev’s career perhaps, but also disfigure the eye and do permanent damage. No professional bout should be allowed to continue as long as this one was, without the presence of a doctor checking, with serious consideration for ring safety.

Later, blood was streaming from the corner of Lebedev’s left eye, a crazy situation.

Beyond a certain point, the Jones corner would have been concerned Lebedev was trying to steal the fight on the cards. Indeed, Lebedev was somehow ahead on the cards going into round 11-but it was not to be. Putting an end to the sadistic contest, Jones landed a brutal left hook to the left which doubled a helpless Lebedev over, then followed with a short right power shot to the head which sent Lebedev face first to the canvas, knocked out for the count of ten for the first time in his career.

Jones, Colon, Panama, is now 39-3, 31 knockouts. Lebedev, Chekhov, Russia, falls to 25-2, 19 knockouts. Jones won the WBA World Cruiserweight title in 2008 with a tenth round stoppage of First Arslan in Germany. Jones defended the title against Valery Brudov in October 2010 with an eleventh round stoppage in Panama City, and again with a sixth round stoppage in November 2011.

Jones began his career in 1993 with a first round stoppage of Gabriel Camarena in Panama City, weighing 148 pounds. Jones first three world title opportunities were unsuccessful bouts. Two were with WBA World Light Heavyweight champion Laurent Boudouani in 1998, and then WBO World Cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson in 2002. Two of the bouts ended in draws, the third was a split decision loss.
