Yoel Romero Returns After Year Long Recovery Romero vs Clifford Starks: UFC Fox 7

April 16, 2013

(Miami, FL)– Where has the infamous Yoel Romero (4-1) been? Mostly unheard of since his Strikeforce debut and subsequent defeat versus Rafael Cavalcante at Strikeforce:Barnett vs. Kharitonov, Romero returns to the MMA cage this Saturday, April 20, 2013 in none other than the UFC at UFC Fox 7. Romero will face off against Clifford Starks (8-1) who is also coming off a loss at the hands of Ed Herman at UFC 143.

Romero suffered an injury after his fight with Cavalcante which has left him on the shelf for the past year. When asked how he feels getting back into the cage after such a long hiatus, Romero replied, “Don’t let my time away fool you, I have used it wisely, improving  everything from my stand-up to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I am more prepared than I have ever been in my entire life.”

Once ranked as the #6 Light Heavyweight Prospect to watch by The World MMA Scouting Report, Romero returns to the cage as a Middleweight. “It was clear after the Feijao fight that I needed to drop a weight class. I always walked around within five pounds of 205. When I stepped in the cage with Feijao he had 20 to 30 pounds on me and I felt the difference,” said Romero.

“We have been working on Yoel’s technical striking and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu extensively post recovery,” said Tina Vidal-Smith, Romero’s manager at ML Management. “We believe he will be extremely impressive at 185. He has a natural athletic ability unlike anything I have ever witnessed before in any other fighter.”

His athletic ability likely stems from his stint with the Cuban National Wrestling Team where he stacked up medals including a Silver Medal in Freestyle Wrestling at 85kg at the 2000 Olympics. Romero also boasts five World Championships in wrestling including two bronze, two silver, and one gold. He’s been quoted by the likes of Mo Lawal as the “Best wrestler in MMA today” and Middleeasy.com once called Romero’s takedowns as “congruent to a Salvador Dali Painting.” But, Starks has wrestling experience of his own. He was an NCAA Division 1 wrestler at Arizona State. “I’m not concerned about his wrestling,” said Romero. “I respect his abilities but there is no comparison.”

Romero who once called Nuremberg Germany home, now resides in Miami, FL and trains at the world renowned American Top Team at the Coconut Creek and Kendall locations. “I’m thankful to ML Management for helping me move to the United States,” indicated Romero. “I have sparring partners here and training at a caliber that I would have never received in Germany. I don’t think I would have been able to advance my career without it.”

Romero’s fight at UFC Fox 7 will take place Saturday, April 20, 2013 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA and will be aired live on Facebook. Follow Romero on Facebook @YoelRomeroPalacio or on Twitter @YoelRomeroMMA.
