Tomasz Adamek Can Beat Kubrat Pulev

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

New York, NY ( March 7th, 2013)–  Heavyweight Tomasz Adamek’s next bout will be in the United States, against an opponent to be named shortly by Main Events. An opportunity for an International Boxing Federation eliminator bout against Kubrat Pulev of Germany in Germany or Poland did not come to pass. A great opportunity still exists for Adamek.

Adamek can fight Pulev in the United States in 2013. In fact, Adamek can beat Pulev if he makes some style adjustments in what could prove to be the closest and most exciting fight of 2013, if it ever happens.

Adamek, 36, now 48-3 with 29 knockouts, a Polish fighter out of Jersey City, New Jersey, stands 6′ 1 1/2″. Pulev, 31, Sofia, Bulgaria, now 17-0, 9 knockouts, stands 6′ 4 1/2″. Owing to the height differential, Adamek will be punching upward.

Pulev has never fought outside of Germany, but Adamek has. Adamek has fought and won in the United States, Poland, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom and Finland. Adamek has more experience than Pulev, having debuted in 1999, nine years earlier than Pulev did in 2008. Heavyweight contender Adamek is fighting at 222 to 225 pounds, while super heavyweight Pulev is fighting at 247 to 254 pounds.

Adamek is outweighed by Pulev, and would give away height and reach advantage.

The key difference between Adamek and Pulev has to do with the quality of the opponent. Controversial decisions aside, Adamek has fought against the best quality opposition for many years, and his pristine record speaks for itself. Against Kevin McBride, 6’6″ and 285 pounds, Adamek gave away height, reach and weight advantage, and still easily outworked McBride from the inside.

Adamek’s strongest advantage is he is a fine technical fighter who does get inside and outworks his opponents successfully. Adamek ahs done this against Eddie Chambers, Nagy Aguilera, Vinny Maddalone, Michael Grant, Chris Arreola, Jason Estrada, Steve Cunningham, Andrew Golota and Johnathon Banks.

Adamek must immediately get inside on Pulev and set the tempo for the bout, forcing Pulev to fight Adamek’s fight. Pulev will try to keep Adamek outside of range and jab him to death, but Adamek will not be there. The key to victory for Adamek will be superior movement, superior footwork, and serious body work on the inside which will startle Pulev’s game plan enough to force him onto the defensive. Most fighters Adamek has had to face are taller than him anyway.

Pulev is untested, though his last two victories, Alexander Dimitrenko and Alexander Ustinov, were good names. Adamek would be Pulev’s first decent opponent of real consequence. Adamek’ s magic ability is he is the most consistent and hard working fighter in all of professional boxing-when he sets his mind to it.

Adamek need not worry about fighting in Germany if he has to. Adamek had no problem knocking out 28-1 Thomas Ulrich in the sixth round in Dusseldorf, Germany, to defend his WBC Light Heavyweight title. Adamek has versatility and durability, which has befuddled such opponents as Steve Cunningham and O’Neil Bell, by his work rate. Pulev is a bigger and taller fighter, but would not win rounds against a ranked heavyweight like Adamek, Jonathon Banks, or Tony Thompson.

Adamek would have to do more superior conditioning work for this bout over other bouts. Pulev is too big to overpower, but he can be outboxed.  Seven fine heavyweights have gone the distance with Pulev, including Dominic Guinn, Paolo Vidoz, Travis Walker and Zack Page. They could be outpointed, but could not be stopped.  Adamek can win a 10 or 12 rounder over Pulev in 10 or 12 rounds, but Adamek will have to fight hard to win this bout, which may evolve into a highly technical fight.
