Stop The Violence! Hector El Flaco Sanchez is Murdered in Puerto Rico
By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent
Santurce, Puerto Rico (March 6th, 2013)– Having covered the Spanish Harlem funeral of Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho is New York City in December 2012, I hoped I would not be writing about more Puerto Rican boxers getting killed, but it happened again twice. It’s senseless violence.
First, southpaw welterweight prospect Kenneth Diaz, 21, was gunned down in a shootout in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, on January 18, 2013. Then, Golden Boy light welterweight prospect Hector ‘El Flaco’ Sanchez, 26, was shot multiple times in a shootout and killed in Barrio Obrero, in his hometown of Santurce, Puerto Rico, on March 3, 2013.
Boxing has lost its share of greats, from Bert Sugar to Bill Gallo to Emmanuel Steward, of late. Those were natural deaths. The latest deaths are not natural, they are brutally violent. With the tragedies comes the understand violence must stop.
This reporter condemns violence against boxers, athletes, and people. The violence, brutality and hate are a reminder to all of us that we should select the correct pathways in life, and select the best people to emulate, and follow them. Violence is ruining professional sports, and unless people change their ways for the better, 2013 could be a year of tragedy for not just boxers, but professional athletics as well.
