Muhammad Ali Is Alive in Phoenix and in Good Spirits
By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent
Phoenix, Ar (February 6, 2013)–If Muhammad Ali’s wife Lonnie’s final word and photo is the gospel, Muhammad may not be in the best of health, but Muhammad Ali is still alive and in good spirits.
The ‘false’ death rumors and obituary speculation started when Ali’s brother Rahman Ali gave an interview to the United Kingdom’s Sun newspaper saying his brother was near death from Parkinson’s disease, months, days away, and broke down in tears admitting he hoped his brother died now so he could escape further suffering. The Sun, we must remind readers, is a tabloid predicated on generating newsprint sensationalism, akin to Elvis Presley having dinner with Princess Diana.
Joe Frazier’s gone, Emmanuel Stewart’s gone, Angelo Dundee’s gone, and now Ali’s gone. Anybody care for lunch today with Richard Nixon, Frank Sinatra or Marilyn Monroe? The Sun did the unthinkable: it tried to bury Muhammad Ali based on the interview with his brother, like the New York Times obituary written long ago was ready to be activated. And at least some of the general public fell for the bad news.
True statement: bad news travels fast. Often it is not true, but people want to believe bad news so much more than good news, so it travels, often falsely and faster than it should if it were some normal news blurb like a bill passed by the House of Representatives. The internet sometimes lives up to its reputation as a conduit for spreading the gospel of false information once the fire has been lit, making some news on the computer just as bad as a malicious virus which crashes your computer.
Who care for good news when you can discuss the bad news-and the juicier it is the better? Burying someone who is not dead before they are actually dying is not just insensitive, it is downright rude! Look, we all know Muhammad Ali is not in the best of health, and Muhammad knows we know that, but did The Sun newspaper have to twist an interview with Rahman Ali out of context before Super Bowl Sunday? Fortunately, most media outlets were more interested in the Super Bowl than the death of former New York City Mayor Ed Koch or the Ali death rumors.
Responsible journalism was not missed here. The Daily Mail newspaper in Great Britain ran the photo of Ali at home at home with his family in Phoenix, Arizona, a photo which was circulated worldwide on Twitter. Also verified was Ali’s daughter’s telephone call. In the midst of Ali death rumors during exciting Super Bowl Sunday, Muhammad’s daughter May May Ali called her father and spoke with him, and Ali took the telephone and had words to say to the effect of he was fine and very much still alive-to the extent Ali can still express his opinion. On this occasion, he did.
Actions speak louder than words. Cassius Clay AKA Muhammad Ali would have boxing fans and the entire world know he is not dead-and is not dying tomorrow.
Enjoying the broadcast of the Super Bowl XLVII, Ali took time out to see to it his wife took a photo of him making a convincing face, the sort of face which would KAYO anybody who would bury him while he was trying to enjoy the Super Bowl.
It’s obvious by the photo that expressions speak louder than words. The facial expression Ali made is worth a thousand words. Ali got the ‘false’ message and would like to convey to the general public his reply to those who would bury him.
It appears Muhammad was rooting for the Baltimore Ravens, and if so, he won both the Super Bowl and the argument. Muhammad Ali, a master at communication with words or without them, seems to be saying in the photo, “Shut up or I’ll whup you again.” On this occasion, Muhammad won both the Super Bowl and the argument over those who thought him dead. “Don’t bury me yet. It’s not appreciated.” It may have been ‘lights out’ for some of those in New Orleans watching the Super Bowl, but it wasn’t lights out for Muhammad, indeed. Playing the game-and Ali-will go on.
The photo also seems to indicate Ali has not just words, but some nasty choice actions of jab left for those who tried to bury him, and wouldn’t let ‘The Greatest’, a true sportsman for all seasons, enjoy the beloved football game in peace.
A photo is worth a million words. The sun got stung by the bee. As the wolf says “Awooooo.”
