Joe DeGuardia Scores Big as Delvin Rodriguez Wins Again
By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent
Uncaville, Conn (February 16, 2013)– George Tahdooahnippah is a 34 year old Comanche Indian with 34 professional bouts. He has beaten every fighter he has ever faced. Once, he had a no contest in the first round with Dan Wallace in May 2009 when the ring tent collapsed at the Comanche Casino in Lawton, Oklahoma. This forced Tahdooahnippah to travel to Wichita Falls, Texas, in July 2009 to win a six round decision over Wallace in the rematch. He never left Oklahoma again until Friday, February 15, 2012
Tahdooahnippah endured a second collapse. Not the ring, however. His 32-0-1 record got exposed, as did the quality of his opposition in Oklahoma. Traveling to Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncaville, Connecticut, Tahdooahnippah took a horrific six round beating from Devlin Rodriguez on ESPN2 in their ten round middleweight bout.
Tahdooahnippah came out with fire and perhaps the first round was even, but from the second round on, he never had a chance of winning a round or going the distance.
Rodriguez had clear height and reach advantage and walked Tahdooahnippah down, battering him with power rights to the head over Tahdooahnippah’s low left. Rodriguez was way up on the punch count, made his opponent try to fight backing up while trying to hold, and eventually cut off the ring, leaving Tahdooahnippah nowhere to hide. ‘Comanche Boy’ tried with heart but got outclassed. The outcome was never in doubt. The only question was why referee Eddie Cotton let the ESPN2 televised slaughter run so long. The bout was almost stopped in the second round.
Delvin Rodriguez is a remarkable world class fighter. However, promoter Joe DeGuardia made a mistake fighting Delvin above 154 pounds at middleweight.
Rodriguez should take a shot now at IBF Light Middleweight champion Cornelius Bundridge of Detroit, Michigan, if Bundridge can get by challenger Ishe Smith.
Another possibility for Rodriguez is WBO light middleweight champion Zaurbek Baysangurov of Russia (who once lost to Bundridge) if Baysangurov can be lured to the United States for an ESPN2 bout at Mohegan Sun to defend his title. Baysangarov has only appeared in bouts in Germany, Russia, and Ukraine.
The third option for Rodriguez would be to fight the winner of Saul Alvarez versus Austin Trout WBA and WBC World Light Middleweight title unification bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, coming up on May 4, 2013, in which case Joe DeGuardia would have to wait with Delvin for a mega money shot at the winner.
Delvin Rodriguez versus Sergio Gabriel Martinez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at 160 pounds is not a good match up. Delvin was able to fight above 154 pounds simply because Tahdooahnippah was not a quality opponent, despite his padded 32-0-1 record. Joe DeGuardia has done a fine job steering Delvin’s career back on track. Delvin’s next move should be a title shot at 154 pounds, opponent to be determined.
