Tyson Fury to face Steve Cunningham on April 20th at Madison Square Garden

By: Callum Meads

Giant British Heavyweight Tyson Fury is planning to take his charge through the heavyweight division across the pond, as he faces the American favourite, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham. Fury confirmed the rumours were true on his verified twitter account, which has become famous for stirring up controversy in the sporting world. Although this fight may seem strange to a lot of people, it is a fight that can bring Fury the necessary exposure in America, as well as the experience of fighting a guy with the boxing caliber of Steve Cunningham.

Tyson Fury is coming off an ugly and one-sided victory over Kevin ‘Kingpin’ Johnson, who as so often, did not appear to be remotely interested in trying to win the fight. Despite this, Fury once again looked in better condition and tactically sound. Although Steve Cunningham is a natural Cruiserweight coming off an official loss, the choice of opponent is definitely a statement of intent. Steve ‘USS Cunningham fought a rematch with the highly regarded Tomasz Adamek live on NBC this past December, losing out on an extremely controversial split decision. Cunningham choose to box his way around Adamek and refused to engage, protecting his chin and utilizing a great jab. Under the new tutelage of Nazim Richardson, Cunningham boxed beautifully and followed his game plan to military precision. Unfortunately that wasn’t represented on the judges scorecards. We at Real Combat Media UK scored the fight clearly in favour of Steve Cunningham.

As Cunningham is a natural Crusierweight, getting around the sheer size and strength of Tyson Fury wont be easy and made even more difficult by Cunningham’s questionable chin and lean frame. The fight presents an interesting clash of styles and a clear challenge for both fighters.

The fight will take place at Madison Square Garden on April 20th, with the coverage yet to be formally announced, but likely to be live on NBC.
