Ricky Burns to face Miguel Vasquez in a Lightweight unification fight on March 16th

By: Callum Meads

Hull, UK (14th January, 2013) – WBO Lightweight Champion Ricky Burns will take on the Mexican IBF World Champion Miguel Vasquez on March 16th. The unification contest will headline a Frank Warren card at that will also include Nathan Cleverly’s mandatory title defence against Robert Krasniqi. Derek Chisora and George Groves will also appear on the bill, with their opponents yet to be named.  This great night of boxing will be fought at Wembley Arena, with a capacity crowd almost guaranteed.

Ricky Burns was beginning to come under criticism from fans across the pond who believed he was avoiding WBC Champion Adrien Broner, who is now set to face Gavin Rees after the fight with Burns could not be made. Although the fight with Broner was the fight the fans wanted to see, Miguel Vasquez is the next best thing. Vasquez has defended his IBF title seven times and is coming off a great unanimous victory over Mercito Gesta. The decision to face Vasquez is a clear indication that Burns is looking to fight the best guys out there. This unification fight should pave way for the winner to eventually face Broner for the 135lb Ring Title.

Ricky Burns defeated Michale Katsidis over 12 rounds to pick up the WBO World Title, and since then has went on to defeat Paulus Moses and British rival Kevin Mitchell. Burns started his career slowly but he appears to of peaked at the right time, with a whole host of world class competition available to him. A win over Miguel Vasquez would make that fight with Adrien Broner a huge attraction worldwide.
